Vehicle Story

The 1957 MG MGA is the product of an extensive 27-year restoration which was performed after it was found in a barn in 1989. Built to period specifications with upgrades that include knockoff wire wheels, dual driving lights, a luggage rack, and a grille guard, mechanical systems were subject to similar attention, with numerous parts and components having been replaced. The body was also removed from its frame during the restoration process and chemically dipped before being painted British Racing Green which is paired with a caramel leather interior.

The seller describes many of the visible upgrades as adhering to the car's original period, including knock-off wire wheels, the trunk-mounted luggage rack, bumper overriders, dual driving lights, and the grille guard upon which they are mounted. In addition to the frame being stripped and checked for trueness, prior to being finished in British racing green, the body was removed from its underpinnings and running gear, stripped, chemically dipped, and prepared for paintwork at some point during the 27-year restoration process.

Tires are a set of period-correct Firestone items and disc brakes are present in the front.

Caramel-colored leather is used as upholstery on the seats and is continued on the door panels, cockpit rails, and dash pad. The dash itself is made of wood, while the steering rim and shift knob have a lacquered finish. The ashtray is said to be original, but the vintage-style radio is actually a RetroSound head unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Seatbelts are also present. The 100-mph speedometer and 7,000-rpm tachometer are both by Jaeger, and a single Smiths dial displays oil pressure and coolant temperature. The fuel gauge is reported to be inoperative.

A wrench for the knock-off wheels, a fire extinguisher, and a vintage gas can are kept in the trunk, which also houses the spare tire.

The original BMC B-Series four was removed and replaced with freshly-rebuilt 1.6-liter unit. The transmission was also removed and rebuilt, while all hydraulic lines, fuel lines, and electrical wiring was replaced. Suspension componentry was either replaced or rebuilt, a new stainless steel exhaust was installed, and the front drum brakes were converted to discs. Elsewhere, an electronic ignition system was added, the generator was replaced with a modern alternator, the original dual battery array was removed in favor of a single modern alternative, and an electric fuel pump was connected. A high-torque starter, screw-on oil filter conversion, and replacement of the clutch and master cylinder are also noted.

Photos of the underside show light corrosion forming on suspension and steering components along with other steel parts.

I do not believe the seller is including one. To be safe I would only assume what is photographed!

@ch11932 – Are there any videos available of the car being driven? Any idea how easy it would be to remove the grille guard and headlights that are mounted on it? Personal preference but not too keen on the guard/extra lighting but would be helpful to know of it is easily removable or if it is permanently fixed. Thanks ...

As far as difficulty level removing those items, I can't say for certain. Typically those types of items can be removed easily enough. Here's a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtHxe2aaKe4

@jakedog – SteveC is correct. Only one light either side of rear wings. Have body panels been replaced. I have several English cars and will probably be a bidder with questioned answered. I didn't see a top or side curtains. If they aren't there, it's a pretty penny to replace them. Is this car at Gateway cars in St. Louis? Thank you ...

No top, and the title says 1957. Yes, it is with Gateway STL, but exclusive to Auto Hunter currently.

@SteveC – Are you sure this is 1957? The reason I am questioning this is that 57-59 only had a single light in the rear, not a double as shone. ...

Titled as a 1957 - unfortunately I cannot speak for the sellers choice in restoration parts, but my guess would be different year parts on the 57
