Vehicle Story

This 1968 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback is presented as a lightly customized example that underwent a mechanical refresh and a professional repaint in Dark Cherry metallic with color-matched bumpers, shaved moldings, and LED lighting. A rebuilt, air-cooled 1,600cc engine with Weber carburetors and a Scat camshaft sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transaxle, and an aftermarket EMPI exhaust system is fitted. Equipped with a black reupholstered interior, this Type 3 Squareback is offered by the selling dealer with sales documentation, a maintenance record portfolio and an owner’s manual.

This Type 3 Squareback debuted in 1961 and was first imported to the United States in 1966, pairing compact car proportions with exceptional cargo-carrying capability. This 1966 example was reportedly subject to a body-off restoration and a professional repaint in Dark Cherry Metallic, although the seller believes the car came originally painted yellow. A handful of exterior modifications were made at the time of restoration, including the color-matching of the fiberglass bumpers, the removal of body side moldings, the installation of LED front turn signals, and the color-matching of the front and rear light bezels. An EMPI exhaust system with quad tips was also installed.

Powder-coated black 15” wheels with “baby moon” hubcaps are wrapped in Riken Raptor tires. The seller states that the suspension received refurbishment including the installation of replacement Monroe shocks and ball joints, and a front-end alignment. The braking system has discs up front and was reportedly overhauled in a similar fashion with a rebuilt front brake caliper, turned rotors, a master cylinder, and replacement of lines and hoses.

The interior is trimmed in an all-black theme, with reupholstered fold-forward vinyl bucket seats as well as replacement door panels, carpeting, a dash pad and headliner all finished in matching material. The instrument panel is color-matched in Dark Cherry Metallic. The seller adds that the refurbishment included the installation of replacement window and door seals all around.

Instrumentation is delivered by three circular readouts forward of the driver, including a 100-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and an analog clock. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 40k miles, but total chassis mileage is unknown.

The rear-mounted, air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four features twin Weber carburetors and is reported to have been rebuilt. Noteworthy additions to the engine include a Scat camshaft as well as replacement parts for the distributor, fuel pump, fan belt, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. Power is translated to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transaxle and a floor-mounted shift lever.

Photos showing the underside are provided in the carousel.

The sale includes an owner’s manual, a maintenance record portfolio, and additional vehicle documentation.

My first car in 1971. Great memories.........

I have owned a lot of neat cars, good cars like Corvettes, Cadillacs, Pontiacs, but I often think back to my surfing days in Hawaii and my 68 Type 3 Squareback. It was a tough machine and always did the job. I later owned a Type 4 Squareback and although it was fast, it was not the Type 3, which is one of the best made autos I have ever owned. This car may be 50 years old but it is not hard to imagine it still ticking like it did for me.
