Vehicle Story

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle has been driven 700 miles since completion of an inside-and-out restoration process in 2017. Features include SS-specific badging, sway bars, a dual exhaust system, and an Edelbrock intake manifold. Power comes from a replacement big-block 454ci V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission that receives input from a Hurst shift lever. Finished in Phantom Blue Metallic with black stripes over a reupholstered black vinyl interior, this second-generation Chevelle is now offered by the selling dealer with a clear Florida title in the owner’s name.

The midsize Chevelle was part of the General Motors A-body family of vehicles, evolving into a second-generation beginning in 1968 with new tapered front fenders and other body changes. This example from 1970 was resprayed in Phantom Blue Metallic with dual black stripes on the cowl induction hood and the trunk lid. Brightwork adorns the bumpers, wheel arch moldings, sideview mirrors, SS badging, and window trim. Dual exhaust outlets exit below the rear bumper.

Five-spoke 14” mag wheels with SS-branded center caps are wrapped in 225/70 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter tires. The underbody features sway bars and boxed lower control arms, and braking is handled by discs up front and drums in the rear.

The interior is fitted with reupholstered black vinyl bench seats with headrests and matching door panels, padded dash, and carpeting. Amenities include a Hurst shift lever, a three-spoke aluminum steering wheel with a bowtie center, a heater, and a modern Sony AM/FM/CD stereo.

Instrumentation includes rounded clusters with a 120-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. An additional three aftermarket gauges are mounted beneath the dash and offer readouts for oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads just under 1,000 miles, and while true chassis mileage is unknown, it is reported that the car has traveled approximately 700 miles since the restoration.

The replacement big-block 454ci V8 bears a chrome-finished air cleaner and is equipped with an Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake manifold. The drivetrain is reported to run well and features an Edelbrock Performer 2-O intake manifold. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 4-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt differential.

@jamesjr99 – So is this an actual SS or tribute? ...

This Chevelle is believed to be a true SS car. To the best of my knowledge the only way to truly document a 70 SS is be lucky enough to find the factory paper build sheet from GM . this document is located under the back seat an a rarity to have survived. When the build sheet is not found the only alternative verification is to look at the options on the car. Specifically the options which only came on the SS. This car has the factory re-enforced rear torque boxes, boxed rear lower control arms, 12 bolt rear, the bigger sway bars, the extra bolt in the steering joint, round instrument gauges, disc front brakes, and the car was built in Atlanta GA which built SS cars.
