Vehicle Story

This 1940 Ford pickup is an amateur frame-off restoration powered by a flathead V8 engine backed by a manual transmission. Features include hydraulic brakes, a bed-mounted spare, an 8-volt battery, an electric fuel pump, and a Brazilian walnut bed floor. This blue F1 with gray vinyl upholstery is available now and comes with a clear Idaho title from the selling dealer.

Features include chrome front and rear bumpers, dual headlights with chrome rings, a chrome grille, a driver-side windshield wiper, dual side mirrors, dual taillights, a Brazilian walnut bed floor, and body-color running boards.

A set of steel wheels with chrome hubcaps are wrapped in new Coker whitewall radial tires.

The bench seat is upholstered in gray vinyl. Features include metallic light blue interior metal surfaces, an aftermarket turn signal assembly, manual windows, a radio block-off plate, a floor-mounted manual transmission shifter, an under-dash heater, and a black rubber floor mat.

A 100-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage convey important vehicle information. The five-digit odometer shows 69,185 miles, but true mileage is unknown.

The power is provided by a Ford flathead V8 engine backed by a manual transmission. Features include a generator, single-barrel carburetor, closed-element air filter, spin-on oil filter, an electric fuel pump, a battery disconnect switch, and an 8-volt battery. The selling dealer states that the engine smokes a little but did not overheat during a parade the vehicle was driven in.

This pickup was originally equipped with a transverse leaf-spring-mounted solid front axle and transverse leaf-spring-mounted rear drive axle. The stopping power is provided by manual 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.

@Eljefferacing – Please comment on what doesn’t work, how it runs, the quality of the paint and rust. ...

Nothing doesn’t work. It’s running and working as it should. Including electricals. It is a 4 speed on the floor with thumb operated lever to go into reverse (original equipment). It has the original flathead V8 85hp engine. It has a single electric wiper. The after market heater does work - they were not included back then. The engine does smoke a bit on start up and when there is back pressure, but I drove it through the Car d'Alene parade last year.  It doesn't really leak but after sitting a long time it may drip a little.  After all it is an 82 year old vehicle. The running gear is stock. The brakes and stearing are stock.  Ford put hydraulic brakes on the '40 pickup from the factory. The stearing camber and caster are engeneered in such a way that as the turn sharpens the load helps ease the steering.  It is marvelous and novel.
