This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport re-creation is a restored and largely original convertible powered by a newly-serviced big-block 454ci V8 backed by a 4-speed 700R4 automatic transmission. Coming from four years of ownership under the seller, this Chevelle was featured in a write-up and cover photo of the July 2020 issue of Chevy Classics magazine and is described as being in good condition throughout. Finished in red with a black retractable top over a reupholstered black vinyl interior, this second-generation Chevelle is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The Chevelle rides on the mid-sized General Motors A-body platform, and the model grew into its second generation beginning in 1968, with tapered front fenders and a more rounded design. A mid-cycle update in 1971 brought new styling for both front and rear, and small changes were again applied in 1972 including revised placement for the marker lights. This Chevelle from 1972 was restored with a fresh repaint in red with dual black stripes, cowl induction hood and a replacement power-operated black top. Super Sport badging was applied throughout the exterior, and the resulting build was featured on the front cover of Chevy Classics magazine in July 2020. The brightwork is noted to be in good condition and there are dual exhaust outlets at the rear.
Factory 15” mag wheels are wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted discs up front with drums in the rear.
The interior is fitted with reupholstered black vinyl bucket seats, along with matching door panels, dash, and carpeting. Super Sport badging was added to the interior of the car. Amenities include air conditioning.
Instrumentation is provided by a 120-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 34k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The big-block 454ci V8 is rated at 450 horsepower and is reported to be in good mechanical condition by the seller, having received an oil change in July 2021. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a 4-speed 700R4 automatic transmission and a posi-traction.
