Vehicle Story

This 1988 Chevrolet C1500 short-bed truck has been in the same family since new and received a frame-off show truck treatment in 1996. That involved replacing the factory engine with a 358ci V8, installing a rebuilt Muncie M-22 gearbox, and customizing the body with a clear bed floor, Cadillac taillights, and more. This build has received numerous awards and was featured in the Truckin' and Sport Truck magazines, according to the owner. It's now available for sale with a clear title in the seller's name, receipts associated with its customization, and copies of magazine features.

The 1988 model year marked the beginning of the final generation of General Motors's C/K line of trucks. This particular pickup has a single cab body style, a Fleetside short bed, and a black paint job that was applied in 1996. The front end features silver horizontal grille bars and white turn signals and corner lights. A fuel cell sits at the front of the cargo box, near the tailgate, which features vertical Cadillac taillights. The metal floor of the cargo box was replaced with a sheet of 3/8" plexiglass that provides a view of the custom paintwork underneath the truck. A body-color roll pan takes the place of the rear bumper.

This pickup has been lowered approximately seven inches in the front and 10 inches in the rear, and rolls on a set of 18-inch front and 20-inch rear Billet Specialties wheels and Hankook tires

The cabin is is dressed in a combination of red and maroon, and features cloth seats that match the color of the carpeting, as well as manual windows. Between the two front buckets is the shifter for the rebuilt Muncie M22 4-speed manual gearbox and the canister and hardware of a NOS 250 kit.

A set of silver-ringed aftermarket gauges, including a large standalone tachometer, sits behind a three-spoke aftermarket steering wheel mounted on a silver steering column.

This C1500 originally had a 4.3-liter V6 connected to a 5-speed manual transmission. As part of its transformation into a show truck, it received a 358ci V8 highlighted with blue and red connectors, aluminum Brodix heads, a NOS 250 kit and a rebuilt Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission equipped with Tilton hydraulic clutch hardware. Additional upgrades in the engine bay include a smoothed firewall, aluminum radiator and polished coolant expansion tank, master cylinder reservoir, and washer fluid reservoir.

The clear plexiglass cargo bed floor shows a smoothed red frame and smoothed rear axle. Two silver exhaust pipes point down between one of the cross members and the rear differential. The suspension features boxed tubular controls arms and a sway bar finished in off white, with various other pieces finished to match.

According to the seller, their father bought this truck when it was new, they purchased it from their father in 1990, and then drove it daily until performing the frame-off build in1996 that brought it to its current state. It has only been driven four miles since then, but its fluids were changed three months ago.The owner reports that this truck was transported in an enclosed trailer to a variety of shows, including World of Wheels events. It has won numerous awards, such as those for Best Truck and Best Ride on BFGs, and the owner is including copies of magazine features.

@Ericxb – Is the truck drivable or strictly show. Hard to tell if the frame is notched in the pics. Has the front end been realigned. And is the drive shaft aligned properly. Without any proven driven miles I was curious about your opinion. Some builders will build what their asked to. Knowing the trucks not going to work. It looks well built . Thanks ...

Drivable….. Clutch is a 3 disc 7.5” unit that will make driving it more difficult if your not accustomed to driving one. Front end has not been on an alignment rack, only set up toe in shop to get it close. Done many a race car with tape measure and it’s close. So truck will need aligned. Driveline angles are good. Frame is notched in rear so no problem with clearance in the rear. In my opinion, only driving issue will be ride height. It’s low, low, low…and will scrape and scrub on speed bumps and such. I built this to show, and getting it up in the trailer was easy. If it were a driver, bags would be a good idea to add so you don’t hurt the truck. Paint under truck is as nice as the body.

@Bigjohnson – Air bags to raise back up so a guy can get it back down his” out in the country driveway?” Thanks ...

No bags. Ride is static. I live in the country and the truck has been out of the driveway three times without issue. That’s three of the four miles on this truck. The 4th mile was for the magazine shoots at a large show in Gatlinburg Tennessee.
