This 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a well-preserved luxury two-door that is complete with a build sheet, service paperwork, an owner’s manual, and additional documentation. This Town Coupe was originally placed in service June 12 of its model year from Northwest Lincoln-Mercury in Schaumburg, Illinois, and the car has remained in Illinois its entire life. Under the hood resides a 400ci V8 paired with a C6 3-speed automatic transmission. Finished in Black with a matching vinyl half-top over a gray cloth interior, this fifth-generation Town Coupe is now offered with a build sheet, an owner’s card, an owner’s manual, and a clear Illinois title in the seller’s name.
The Continental aged into its fifth generation beginning in 1970 using body-on-frame construction using a stretched version of the Mercury Marquis chassis. Extensive changes were rolled out for 1975 with a restyled roofline, and in 1978 the rear fender skirts were redesigned. This Town Coupe from that year is painted Black and has a matching vinyl half-top. The exterior provides retractable headlamps, a chrome grille, Town Coupe badging, and a full-width taillight panel. The bumpers and other bright accents are in good condition, including the hood ornament, side moldings, window trim, and handles.
Steel 15” wheels with Lincoln-branded full covers are wrapped in whitewall tires. Handling is assisted by power steering and power disc brakes.
The interior offers seating for six, featuring gray cloth split-bench Twin Comfort Lounge upholstery with fold-down armrests. Matching materials are applied to the door panels, dash, and carpeting. The cabin features woodgrain trim on the door panels, dash, and steering wheel, with Town Coupe scripted badging at the passenger side. Amenities include a clock, power door locks, power driver and passenger seats, air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, a power antenna, a rear defroster, cruise control, multiple ashtrays, a power trunk release, and power windows, including vent windows. The trunk is fully carpeted.
Instrumentation includes a horizontal 85-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 88k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The 400ci V8 was rated at 123 horsepower and 319 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a C6 3-speed automatic transmission and a column-mounted shift lever.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The sale includes a build sheet, an owner’s card, owner’s manual.

@ckrause333 – Seems this seller is only answering selected questions. I’m seeing a lot of red flags popping up. ...
What questions do you have on the car that I can answer?
@Skyman – I would be driving this car from Illinois to Georgia. Do you see any reasons why the car could not make this trip? ...
I do not see why not.
@dduanee – This is a nice looking specimen, and errors in the write-up, (e.g. inconsistency regarding the interior materials), make me hesitant to bid but I have some questions for the seller: What things don't work? Any rust or paint bubbling anywhere? Any evidence of metal work? What are the date codes on the tires? Thanks! ...

@Hammersmith – Why is there so much rust in the engine compartment?? ...
Rust in the engine bay? Whenever metal is exposed to the elements you get a surface rust. Please elaborate on your question.
