This 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible has received a multi-year cosmetic and mechanical restoration under the seller’s 15-year ownership, outfitted with 400ci V8 that has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake, an HEI distributor, and additional performance components. Power is directed to the rear via a replacement 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and Rally 2 wheels with BFGoodrich tires. Finished in red with a white cloth retractable top over a reupholstered red vinyl interior, this second-generation GTO is now offered with a spare Rally clock, a convertible boot, restoration documentation, and a clear Arkansas title in the seller’s name.
Available initially as an option package in 1964 on the midsized Pontiac LeMans, the GTO name later became a standalone model in 1966. The GTO along with other General Motors A-body cars subsequently received a rework beginning in 1968, adopting a “semi-fastback” design, a reduced overall length, and a lowered ride height. This example was repainted in red and has a replacement power-operated white retractable top with a glass rear window. Features include hideaway headlights, a color-matched Endura front bumper, hood air intakes, GTO rear quarter decals, a chrome rear bumper, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller has provided photos in the gallery documentation phases of the build process.
Rally 2 15” wheels with polished rings and PMD center caps are wrapped in 215/70-sized BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires. Handling is assisted by power steering, and stopping power comes from a Right Stuff disc brake conversion, along with stainless-steel brake lines. The suspension has been refurbished with Urethane front and rear suspension bearings as well as the installation of front and rear sway bars.
The interior is fitted with reupholstered fold-forward red vinyl bucket seats up front, split by a center console. Amenities include a tilt steering wheel, an AM/FM radio, and a vinyl-lined trunk containing a Goodyear spare tire. The seller reports that all weather stripping has been replaced.
Instruments consist of a 120-mph speedometer and a hood-mounted tachometer, along with gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and a warning light for voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 24k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The 400ci V8 was factory rated at 350 horsepower and has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake, an HEI distributor, finned aluminum valve covers, stainless-steel fuel lines, replacement spark plug wires, and a GTO Judge air filter assembly. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a replacement 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The sale includes a replacement Rally clock and restoration documentation. The seller has provided videos to further show the vehicle.
