Vehicle Story

This one-owner 1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is finished in Twilight Blue Clearcoat Metallic over a Raven Charcoal cloth interior and gets its power from a rebuilt turbocharged 2.3-liter I4. That is connected to a 5-speed manual transmission with a clutch that was replaced when the engine was rebuilt. Equipment includes cruise control and power locks and mirrors. Located in Minnetonka, Minnesota, this Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is available now with receipts associated with its rebuilt engine and new clutch, a transferrable 3-year/30K-mile warranty covering the engine work, and a clear title, though CARFAX reports the vehicle as a total loss in 2001.

For the 1987 model year, the new Thunderbird received updated styling that included flush-mounted headlights and side glass as well as revised taillights. This particular 1988 model is dressed in Twilight Blue Clearcoat Metallic paint accented with a red accent stripe that runs around the perimeter of the lower body. It features a lower front fascia with foglights, a closed grille area, and dual hood scoops.

According to the current owner, the car has never been driven during the winter, but they report that the hood and driver's-side quarter panel were repainted in the spring of 2021 due to sun-induced paint fading.

The Raven Charcoal cabin is furnished with gray carpeting and two-tone gray bucket front and rear bench seating. Equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, and cruise control. The dashboard houses analog instrumentation that includes a 6K-rpm tachometer and 95-mph speedometer as well as gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, boost, and battery amperage.

The seller reports that a slight turn of the volume knob can occasionally cause the volume to go from a low level to a high level.

The dual-scoop hood covers a turbocharged 2.3-liter I4 that was rebuilt in September of 2020. It's connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox that was equipped with a new clutch at the same time. The car's total mileage is reportedly 95,693, but the engine and clutch have 2,000 miles on them. A new radiator was installed in June of 2021.

The 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe came from the factory with Automatic Ride Control. That is reportedly non-functional in this car, which is equipped with new shocks that are incompatible with the system. The original Auto-Ride shocks will be provided with the sale of the car.

Sale includes paperwork related to the car's rebuilt engine and new clutch as well as a transferrable 3-year/30K-mile warranty with 2 years remaining that covers the engine work. Additionally, the vehicle will come with a nylon storage cover and a front leather Bra.

AUTOHUNTER ADMIN UPDATE 9/30/21 8 AM PST: Per CARFAX the vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company in 2001 due to minor hail damage

@Boobola – HOW DID YOU KEEP THE INTERIOR SO CLEAN FOR HAVING 95K MILES ON IT?? ...

Well as I stated in an earlier response, we had a Van as our primary vehicle. We used that for the kids and whatever. I used the T-Bird to drive to work and fun. Pretty much just me in it most of the time I guess.

@DickB – The car has never been driven in the winter. I have a three car garage and store it on blocks, under cover before the first snow fall. Sorry, I have no storage rental documents. I had a beater at the time I bought the T-Bird new and so drove that for the first few winters. We then purchased a van and the T-Bird became my summer "fun" car. There is one under carriage photo posted that shows no rust or corrosion. I can assure there is none. I can post a photo of it stored in my garage if desired. The tires were purchased at Sears on 6-19-96 with a mileage on the car of 49,000. I have periodic balance and rotation records that will be supplied with the vehicle. The photo's show about 1/2 life on the treads. ...

Here is a photo of the car as it sits in my garage today. This is where it is stored, but up on stands, for the winter.

@rausch – Tire date codes? More underbody pics- Carfax shows it has been in MN all its life, you state no winter driving, any records/documentation to show storage each winter? Underbody shots should help to prove no salt corrosion. Thanks ...

Some things not noted in the writeup: The ’88 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was voted “Car of the Year” for 1988. It came equipped standard with a Turbo Charged engine, 4-wheel ABS (one of the first U.S. vehicles to have this feature), Automatic Ride control, a switch to allow operation with regular or premium fuel and power front bucket seats. All features are fully operational, other than the Ride Control. Replacement new or rebuilt original shock absorbers were not available in 2008 when they were replaced. (The original ride control electronics will be provided with the vehicle.) DickB

This vehicle is accident free. The title was reissued in the late 90’s due to minor hail damage. At that time the insurance company only valued the vehicle at $2,800 and the hail damage was estimated at $1,000. The insurance company paid full value for the vehicle and it was fully repaired and then reinstated. Hence the CarFax listing as a totaled vehicle. The repair involved no paint or bondo and was minor “spoon“ rubout dent repair. As the pictures show, there was no residual damage. DickB
