This 1986 Chevrolet El Camino is a largely original utility coupe that has resided long-term in Arizona and is powered by a replacement 305ci V8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Originating in San Antonio, Texas, this example was relocated to Arizona in 1989 where it has remained. The vehicle has received regular maintenance and little mileage has been added since the move to the Southwest. Finished in repainted two-tone Tan Metallic with Brown lower rockers over a tan cloth interior, this fifth-generation El Camino is now offered with service documentation, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear Arizona title in the seller’s name.
The El Camino two-door utility vehicle first launched in 1959 on the Chevrolet station wagon platform and underwent various iterations over the subsequent decades. The fifth-generation rolled out in 1978 on the A-body pickup platform, later moving to the G-body in 1982. Styling at the time was derived from the Malibu but riding on a longer wheelbase. A 1982 refresh brought about a crosshatch grille, quad rectangular headlights, and modified powertrain options. This El Camino from 1986 was repainted two-tone Tan Metallic and Brown with color-keyed sideview mirrors. The bumpers, grille, side moldings, wheel arches, and other exterior trim are reported to be corrosion-free, and the interior of the cargo bed appears in good condition with minimal hauling use evident over the years.
Rallye 14” wheels are mounted to Defender Sport SR raised-white-letter tires.
Seating consists of a tan cloth split-bench, which is matched to the door panels, two-tone tan and black dash, and tan carpeting. The headliner has been replaced, and amenities include a floor-mounted aftermarket center console, a carpeted dash mat, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and newly serviced air conditioning.
Instrumentation includes an 85-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, voltage, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 16k miles but is said to have rolled once. True chassis mileage is unknown.
The carbureted 305ci V8 was replaced at around 100,000 miles and has been well-maintained since, as demonstrated by 16 records on the CARFAX report. In particular, the electrical system was repaired in October 2021, work to the emissions system was completed in March of the same year, and additional service to the suspension, exhaust, air conditioning, and other items was carried out within the last two years. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a column-shifted 4-speed automatic transmission.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The CARFAX report shows a history free of accidents or damage, although there is mention of inconsistent mileage readings due to the five-digit odometer rollover. The sale includes service records as well as photos of the vehicle prior to the refurbishment.
