Vehicle Story

This 1964 Pontiac LeMans GTO two-door hardtop is presented as a 17,890-mile, rust-free muscle car with competition race heritage and supporting historical documentation. This GTO was originally delivered to Meadows Pontiac in Portland, Oregon and issued to its original owner who competed in the Winternationals race series in southern California in the subsequent years. Under the hood, the tri-power 389ci V8 is backed by a replacement Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in Sunfire Red over the original black vinyl interior, this first-year GTO is now offered with an owner’s manual, racing memorabilia, Protect-O-Plate, a build sheet, documentation, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The GTO was first offered as an option package on the LeMans model beginning in 1964, sharing a chassis with other General Motors A-body cars at the time. This GTO from that initial model year spent its early years as stock “D-class” competition race car under “The Old Goat” livery in California as part of the NHRA Winternationals series in the late 1960s. The car was subsequently stored indoors long-term and was later resprayed in its original Sunfire Red, a color Hot Rod magazine called "one of the rarest colors offered by Pontiac" for 1964 in an article from August of 2009. Pontiac canceled Sunfire Red at one point in the 1964 model year, but dealers "were able to make Pontiac retract the cancellation after about 30 days, so the color finished the model year," according to former Pontiac adman Jim Wangers in the same story. The resulting finishes are accented by corrosion-free brightwork, dual hood scoops, and GTO badging.

Black 14-inch steel wheels with polished Pontiac-branded hubcaps are wrapped in Silvertown Radial redline tires and sit in front of four-wheel drum brakes.

The interior is optioned with original black vinyl upholstery with matching door panels, dash, center console, and carpeting. Amenities include metallic dash accents, tinted glass, a push-button radio, and a Hurst shift lever with a cue-ball knob. The trunk contains the original spare tire and jack.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for the coolant temperature, oil pressure, and battery voltage. Aftermarket under-dash gauges with other readouts have been added. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 17,920 miles, which the seller states is a true reading. The seller believes that 12,000-14,000 of the miles are from being flat-towed by the original owner.

The tri-power 389ci V8 has been upgraded and resides in a fully detailed engine bay. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a replacement Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission and a positraction rear end with 4.11 gearing.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes a volume of documentation encompassing the car’s original build configuration, its race heritage, and ownership history. Among the artifacts are brochures from the 1968 and 1970 Winternationals in Pomona, California with this car listed, and a handwritten letter about the car’s engine specifications, and 35-mm slides and 8-mm movies about the car’s history. The original owner’s manual, warranty, book, and Protect-O-Plate are included. Spare parts provided are the original M20 4-speed transmission in pieces, spare cams, lifters, an aluminum flywheel, M&H drag slicks, the original bell housing, dual exhaust system without mufflers, and unused tailpipes.

@Dannyh – Good morning! Is this the original engine that came in the car 1964? Long long is the 35 mil video? How long ago was your car repainted ? Please answer these questions…….I really would appreciate it. Thanks so much and have a great blessed day. Danny ...

@Chief_Charlie – The information in the Vehicle Story and documents state that the car was purchased in 1964, raced until 1970 and then stored until 1994 when a new owner had it repainted in the original color. Has the car been re-painted since then? Are you the third owner of the car? The records indicate the engine was "blueprinted" in 1965. The Vehicle Story says the 389 V8 "has been upgraded" Is the "upgrade" the blueprinting done in 1965; or has other work been done to the engine since then? A photo of the Spare Parts that come with the sale, especially the "dual exhaust system without mufflers" would be helpful to a purchaser that has to have the car shipped to them. Thank you for your responses. ...
