This 1949 Ford Custom two-door sedan is finished in burgundy over a red cloth and vinyl interior, and power comes from a rebuilt 239ci flathead V8 mated to a 3-speed column-shifted manual transmission. Equipment includes a replacement gas tank, Glass Pack Muffler, a new brake master cylinder, external oil filter, exterior sun shade, Passenger Assist Straps, and dual chrome side mirrors. This first-generation Custom is now offered with a clear Illinois title in the seller’s name.
The 1949 Custom model was marketed as part of the completely new redesign of Ford cars after the war. This first year example was the top trim level when it was introduced at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel In New York City On June 10, 1948. Finished in Burgundy paint, the brightwork exhibits a deep reflective shine in the photos, including the horizontal chrome trim, bumpers, window surrounds, and side moldings. Other features include an exterior front sun shade, Glass Pack muffler, two-piece windshield, chromed front and rear bumpers with guards, chrome handles, and dual chrome side mirrors.
Body-colored 15” steel wheels with polished Ford hubcaps and beauty rings are wrapped in Coker whitewall Radial tires. A matching spare tire is located in the trunk.
The front and rear bench seats are finished in red cloth and vinyl upholstery with matching door panels, and cloth headliner. The dash is painted grey and features a locking glove compartment, and chrome accents that surround the gauge bezel and instrument panel. Windows are operated by crank, and other features include rubber floor mats in the front footwells, two sun visors, passenger assists straps, and B Pillars for easier rear seat movement.
A two-spoke steering wheel with a horn ring fronts the gray painted dash that houses a 100 mph speedometer and integrated dials for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and battery voltage. An analog clock is centered in the dash and the five-digit odometer reads 76,417 miles, although true mileage is unknown.
Power comes from a rebuilt 239ci flathead 8-cylinder supplied by a single-barrel carburetor with a factory rated 100hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted 3-speed manual gearbox.
