Vehicle Story

This 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS two-door hardtop is powered by a 396ci big-block V8 engine backed by a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. The seller states this is a factory SS, numbers-matching, body-off restoration. Features include SS badges, manual steering, manual brakes, electric wipers, a center console-mounted Rally gauge pack, a dash-mounted tachometer, and black bucket seats. This Burgundy Red 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS is available now from a dealer and has a clear Iowa title.

This body-off restoration is finished in Burgundy Red with a black vinyl top and has all the factory chrome and stainless trim, emblems and handles in place. SS badges and engine designation emblems can be found on the front fenders. A chrome front bumper with accessory bumper guards are present. A chrome bumper with bumper guards, stock style taillights, and SS emblems along with round dual exhaust tips can be found at the rear.

GM Rally wheels with button hub caps and trim rings are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial tires. The wheels feature chrome SS center caps with polished trim rings around the outside lip. Chrome wheel opening trim can be found on all the wheel wells.

Interior is furnished with original style black material throughout with black vinyl headliner, black carpet, and bucket seats. Included is a center console with Rally pack gauges for monitoring battery voltage, coolant temperature, manifold vacuum and oil pressure with climate controls mounted directly above. All door handles and trim are factory correct. Factory black seat belts are present.

The dashboard is refinished in matching Burgundy Red on the lower half, while a black vinyl dash pad and round tachometer can be found on top. The speedometer is a 120 MPH sweep style and a factory 6000 RPM tachometer is located to the right along with an original AM Chevrolet radio and bezel. An accessory GM compass is mounted under the dash. An original style GM steering column is topped by a black Impala steering wheel with horn ring. A custom aftermarket SS 396 logo can be found on the rear package tray under the window.

The engine is a 396ci V8 Turbo-Jet 350hp backed by a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. An original style black dual snorkel air cleaner, stamped steel chrome valve covers, cast iron exhaust manifolds and orange paint complete the engine. An original style radiator, alternator, manual brake master cylinder, electric windshield wipers, and accessory windshield washer bottle with full glass refill bottle can be found under the hood. An original style insulation pad has been installed on the hood.

Factory appearing black floor panels and factory style chassis and suspension components are in place and painted black. A full-length dual exhaust is equipped in addition to a front sway bar. A chrome differential cover on a factory style 12 bolt rear axle and new gas tank can be seen at the rear. Additional photos of the undercarriage can be found in the carousel to the right.

Gray spatter paint, factory-style vinyl floor mat and spare tire with Impala SS hub cap and whitewall radial tire can be found in the trunk. Wiring is in the correct location with optional trunk light included. Seller states this Impala has new fuel gauge, turn signals and brake lights.

One other comment regarding accuracy. I grew up with a stock version of this car except it was a 327 cu.in./275 h.p. . I don’t believe the taillights are stock to a 66 Impala or Impala S.S. They are stock on a 66 Caprice. The 66 SS has 3 rectangular sections (one of which curves around to the side.). Any chrome trim within the tail light runs vertical on the SS, not 3 chrome strips side to side. I’d be surprised if there was an option on original purchase to change the tail lights to 66 Caprice tail lights. Just saying…

@MRMR – Ahhh. correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the GM 700R4 introduced in 1982 making it impossible for this to be a full numbers matching car? Unless numbers matching for this car just means engine and body. ...

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, the description has been amended
