Vehicle Story

This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SL has over $7K in receipts for mechanical repairs and is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission. Features include air conditioning, an aftermarket radio, disc brakes, power steering, and power brakes. Recently installed new parts include the soft top, valve covers, air filter, fuel injectors, A/C components, rebuilt steering box, and various suspension components. This white R107-series Mercedes SL with a blue vinyl interior is available now and comes with a body-color hardtop and clear title from the selling dealer.

The body is finished in white and has chrome and stainless trim, emblems, and handles. A chrome front bumper with rubber bumper guards and ends can be seen just below the quad headlamps and chrome grille. A new soft top can be raised to cover the passenger compartment. At the rear, a chrome bumper with rubber ends and guards is mounted below the taillights with integrated reverse lights. The dual-tip exhaust can be seen exiting at the left rear under the bumper.  According to the selling dealer, minor issues that need attention are dings on the chrome front and rear bumpers and hood, a crack in the driver-side rear taillight, and flaws in the paint on the removable hardtop. The exterior is shown in greater detail in one of the videos below.

The polished Mercedes wheels are wrapped in radial tires.

The bucket seats are covered in blue vinyl that carries onto the door panels. A fold-down armrest separates the front seats. Blue carpet covers the entire cabin floor. The blue vinyl dashboard, center stack, and center console are accented with woodgrain trim. The center console houses the automatic shifter, power window switches, and hazard light switch. An aftermarket Denon cassette stereo has been installed. The steering column is topped with a black 4-spoke steering wheel with a padded Mercedes horn button. The seller states there are two small tears in the hardtop's headliner and the sun visors hang loose.

A 160-mph speedometer and a 7K-rpm tachometer with an integrated clock share space in the instrument cluster with the fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure gauges. The selling dealer reports there are 24K miles on the odometer, but true mileage is unknown.

The engine is a fuel-injected 4.5-liter V8 and comes paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Emissions control devices, the power brake booster, the master cylinder, and a new windshield washer fluid reservoir can be seen under the hood. Other new parts include the valve covers, air filter, fuel injectors, A/C components, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and fuel filter. The seller notes that the transmission has been flushed and that there are oil, transmission, and exhaust leaks. The selling dealer posted a road test video below. The steering box has been rebuilt and the inner and outer tie rods, lower front control arm bushings, and front shocks have been replaced, according to the selling dealer. There is damage in front of the rear wheels and behind the front wheels on the underside, which can be seen in one of the videos below.

Are the rocker panels rotted under the trim? Did the undercarriage show rot behind the front fender? How bad are the oil and trans leaks, and do you know where they’re coming from?
