This vintage 1968 Airstream Land Yacht is a dual-axle travel trailer that underwent an inside-and-out overhaul in 2014 that resulted in more than $10,000 in receipts. Restoration work included the replacement of the HVAC system, tires, brakes, and interior furnishings. Features include kitchen facilities, living quarters, a bathroom, wooden cabinetry, and storage compartments. Finished in polished aluminum coachwork with an earth tones interior, this Airstream trailer is now offered with service records, owner’s manuals, and a clear title.
The Airstream name dates back to the late 1920s when founder Wally Byam assembled travel trailers in Los Angeles and offered kits to do-it-yourselfers wishing to do the same. The company’s first official model was called the Clipper and launched in 1936. During the middle of the century, Airstream was based out of both Santa Fe Springs, California and Jackson Center, Ohio, becoming renowned for sleek, rounded aluminum exterior styling. The Land Yacht was the upper tier of the product lineup. This example from 1968 bears its reportedly original aluminum exterior that was polished during the refurbishment process in 2014. The trailer received all new exterior lighting at the same time. Features include dual propane tanks up front, replacement roof vents, a rear bumper, crank windows with functional hardware, and a placard denoting the model name along with Airstream’s two manufacturing headquarters. The seller notes that the exterior could use a buffing.
Two axles with steel wheels received all new tires and the brakes were replaced in 2014.
The interior is furnished with living quarters, a kitchen with a functional refrigerator, freezer, stovetop, stainless steel sink, and oven. Additional floor plan features include a modular living room with seating and a bedroom. The cabin is trimmed with woodgrain and industrial-grade carpeting throughout. The cushions were reupholstered in brown fabric in 2014 along with ivory drapes and newer shades in the kitchen and bathroom. The ceiling-mounted air conditioning system was replaced, along with the gaskets around the doors and windows and the credenza tabletop. Equipment includes cabinets and closets for storage, a magazine rack, and reading lamps.
Instrumentation includes a centralized wall-mounted control panel for the battery condition, water pump status, holding tank status, and other readouts.
The propane hoses and regulator along with the freshwater tank were replaced in 2014. The water lines have been purged for ease of winterization as needed.
The sale includes original wheels with tires with dog dish caps, receipts, service records, and owner’s manuals.
