Vehicle Story

This 1940 Buick Special Series 40 two-door coupe was kept by the same owner for 35 years and receives power from a reportedly numbers-matching 248ci Dynaflash straight-8 paired with a 3-speed manual transmission. The refreshed exterior features brightwork trim and rides on a set of whitewall tires. Accompanying the sale is documentation including build photographs, receipts, a shop manual, magazine articles the vehicle was featured in, and the awards it has received over the years. Refinished in Royal Maroon Metallic over a tan cloth interior, this Special is now offered by the selling dealer with a clear title.

The Special full-size model rode on the General Motors B platform and a 118-inch wheelbase when it debuted for 1936 in coupe, sedan, and convertible variations. The following years brought restyles that included changes to the wheelbase, a wider grille, and reworked exterior trim. This 40 Special two-door coupe was reportedly kept by the same owner for 35 years and received a repaint in Royal Maroon Metallic (544). This reportedly award-winning coupe features a two-piece windshield, a vented engine bay, rubberized running board step plates, and a single polished exhaust outlet at the rear.

The body-color steel wheels have chrome hubcaps and are wrapped in whitewall tires.

The interior is fitted with dual tan cloth bench seats, matched to the door panels, carpeting, and floor mats. The dash is color-matched to the exterior and features a silver fascia. An American Hi-Fi AM/FM/cassette head unit is mounted inside the glove compartment. The trunk contains a spare tire underneath a wooden parcel shelf.

Vehicle information is conveyed through a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 24K miles, although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The center-hinged hood opens up to a reportedly numbers-matching 248ci Dynaflash straight-8 equipped with overhead valves. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission.

The sale includes a binder of records, awards received, a shop manual, and magazines the car was featured in.
