Vehicle Story

This garage-kept 1962 Chrysler Imperial Southampton four-door hardtop has power convenience options, whitewall tires, power brakes, and an air-adjustable rear suspension. Under the hood is a 413ci Wedge V8 paired with a push-button A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes an R-134a air conditioning system, a push-button radio, and full gauges with chrome interior accents. Finished in metallic rose over a brown vinyl and cloth interior, this Imperial Southampton is now offered with a clear Minnesota title.

The Imperial name was established as Chrysler Corporation’s upscale luxury brand in 1955, initially as a standalone make but later reclassified underneath the Chrysler umbrella. A second generation was rolled out to the public in 1957 on the D-body platform with wider dimensions compared to other Mopar vehicles of the time. The tailfins were softened in 1962 and the grille was split into two sections that same year. This metallic rose Imperial Southampton four-door hardtop from 1962 is accentuated with a hood ornament, quad headlights, script fender badging, full-length side moldings, a power antenna, and gunsight taillights on top of the rear quarters.

Steel 15-inch wheels with Imperial-branded hubcaps are wrapped in whitewall tires.

The interior is fitted with brown vinyl and cloth bench seats, matched to the door panels, dash, headliner, carpeting, floor mats, and the rectangular steering wheel. Features include metallic trim, power windows, a push-button signal-seeking radio, Imperial-branded door sill plates, and air conditioning that has been upgraded to R134-a refrigerant.

Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 55,120 miles, which is believed to be original although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The 413ci Wedge V8 is said to run well per the seller. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a TorqueFlite 3-speed push-button A727 automatic transmission.

This car came from the factory with an air-adjustable rear suspension. Stopping is handled by power brakes. Additional photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

AUTOHUNTER ADMIN UPDATE 7/08/22 7:58 AM: A photo of the dash lights illuminated has been added to the end of the carousel.
