Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1940 Buick Super Eight sedan went through mechanical and exterior restoration in 2015 and is powered by the partially rebuilt combination of a 248ci inline-8 paired and a 3-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes Firestone whitewall tires, amber fog lamps, brightwork, and the original glass. Finished in two-tone English Green and Ludington Green over the original tan cloth interior, this first-year Super is now offered with records, awards, a shop manual, an owner’s manual, a 1939 Life magazine ad, car show posters, the original key in a leather Buick key wallet, a removable aftermarket center console, and a clear Kansas title in the seller’s name.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

Riding on the General Motors C-body platform, this Art Deco-style Super touring sedan from 1940 was repainted in 2015 in its two-tone English Green and Ludington Green exterior finish. The body features chrome brightwork, bumper over-riders, amber fog lamps, a two-piece windshield, dual mirrors, the original glass, and an exhaust tip. The seller has provided images of the restoration process in the carousel to the right.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Body-color steel wheels with Buick-branded hubcaps are wrapped in Firestone whitewall tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The reportedly all-original interior is fitted with tan cloth upholstery for both the front and rear benches, matching door panels, and a dashboard accented with bright trim. A horn and a starter button were added in 2015. Additional cabin features include faux woodgrain trim, a rear passenger grab-handle, and a whitewall spare tire that is housed underneath a parcel shelf in the trunk.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Instrumentation is presented within an engine-turned aluminum fascia and includes a central 110-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer tracks mileage, although the actual mileage on the chassis is unknown. The seller notes that not all the gauges are functional.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 248ci Dynaflash inline-8 was partially rebuilt in 2015 along with the 3-speed manual transmission. According to the seller, the transmission grinds when shifting and the clutch needs to be adjusted.

UNDERCARRIAGE

A variety of photos showing the underside of the vehicle are available in the carousel.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The sale includes engine rebuild records dating back to 2010, a 1940 Buick shop manual, an owner’s manual, a 1939 Life magazine ad, car show posters, the original key in a leather Buick key wallet, a removable aftermarket center console, and awards.
