Vehicle Story

This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 is finished in Corvette Bronze over dark orange leather interior. Powered by a 427ci big-block V8 with three two-barrel carburetors, this L71 is mated to a heavy-duty close-ratio Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 3:55 ratio Positraction rear end. The odometer reads 39k miles which are documented original per the seller, 1K of those have been added by the seller in the five years of ownership. The car was previously listed with AutoHunter in September 2020 and is being relisted due to a non-paying buyer, through no fault of the seller. Now offered with a color-matched hardtop, this C3 convertible comes with the original owner’s manual, factory literature, service records and a clear Maryland title in the sellers’ name.

The fiberglass body came from the factory finshed in Corvette Bronze Poly (992), a complete repaint was performed in the 1990s including the color-matched hardtop. The seller states the body is showing no signs of fiberglass shrinkage, nor exposed rivets on the nose. The retractable black canvas soft-top is believed to be original and features a plastic rear window and a dealer-optioned chrome luggage rack is also affixed to the rear trunk lid.

Factory 15” Rally wheels feature chrome trim rings and hubcaps and come wrapped in Goodyear Redline Speedway tires that measure 235/60. According to seller, all brake pads, rotors and shocks are said to have been replaced during current ownership.

The interior features matching dark orange leather (426) seats, door panels carpets and dashboard. Features include transistor ignition, an AM/FM radio, analog clock, a faux wood-rimmed steering wheel and rare factory equipped power windows.

Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer, along with gauges for oil pressure, fuel and voltage. The five-digit analog odometer shows just over 39k miles which is the original mileage supported by documentation from multiple states.

This 427ci L71 V8 is equipped with a Tri-Power 3x2 carburetor setup, which was factory rated at 435 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The seller notes all three carburetors were restored and rebuilt by a Holley Carburetor specialist during ownership. Recent engine maintenance includes a new water pump, voltage regulator, motor mounts and new braided plug wires as well as a replacement of the exhaust system.  Per the seller, the engine block stamping is 404673, which matches the last six characters of the vehicle’s chassis number.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through the Muncie M21 4-speed transmission. Additional pictures of the undercarriage are available in the gallery.

Maintenance in anticipation of sale includes an oil change, new spark plugs and tire rotation. The sale includes the removable hard top, flannel car cover, sales literature and NCRS judging manual.

AUTOHUNTER ADMIN UPDATE: 11/12/20 8:30PM: Pictures of the removable hard top and undercarriage have been added to the end of the gallery

It appears that the entire 1968 original emissions system including the smog pump is missing? Does the title have “actual” or. “exempt” mileage? Are you selling this Corvette as having the “original born with”engine?
