Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This garage-kept 1972 Mercury Cougar convertible is 1 of 1,240 built in its model year and is powered by a 351ci V8 engine backed by an automatic transmission. Features include a power convertible top, factory air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Finished in Competition Blue with a white top over a white vinyl and gray cloth interior, this garage-kept Cougar is available now and comes from the seller with a clear Florida title.

EXTERIOR - FEATURES

The exterior is finished in the original factory-applied Competition Blue as verified by color code 3F on the data tag. Features include chrome bumpers, quad headlights, a chrome grille with a gray insert, rocker panel and wheel opening moldings, and dual color-keyed mirror housings with a manual driver-side mirror. Additional features include a power white vinyl convertible top with a glass rear window and dual taillights with integrated reverse lights.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of steel wheels with full hub caps is wrapped in whitewall radial tires.

INTERIOR - FEATURES

The front bucket seats and the rear seat are upholstered in white vinyl with gray cloth inserts. Features include white door panels with manual windows, black carpeting, a floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter, power steering and brakes, air conditioning, a black dashboard with a black top pad, and an AM radio.

INTERIOR - GAUGES

This Cougar is equipped with a 120-mph speedometer, 6K-rpm tachometer, fuel level and coolant temperature gauges, and warning lights for various vehicle systems. The odometer reads 33,764 miles, which the seller believes to be accurate.

(And very frankly...all Connecticut classic dealers have a deserved reputation of decades of "sales puff" bordering on (and frequently simply being) dishonest thieves - to overcome.) Basic research indicates this seemingly good example of a survivor type 70s vintage - not especially notable model but the much more desired and valued convertible, (which weren't all that well done, problem free or finished when new) exceeds $20k now. A premium in fact as I personally prefer original, including some signs of having lived the life...(and anyone that wants to screw it up making it "better than new," can certainly do so!). ...

Well, (excuse the pun), I am a bit lost with, with your phraseology, misplaced parenthesis, and run on sentences here, but I think you are saying you agree that a mostly original paint car , that has a little patina, but appears to be mostly original rather than being a re-done rat, holds more value to you as a collector. If so, I totally agree with you. That said, I was surprised, after logging into my Hagerty Driver's Club account, to find that "72 Cougar convertibles are not valued nearly as high as '72 Mustangs convertibles. This is odd to me since they were always considered to be a higher end version of the Mustang, and are essentially the same car underneath the skin, even sharing many chassis parts, and some body parts like hinges. Still by Hagerty's price guide, which runs 1-4, with 4 being Concours condition, and 1 being fair condition. I would rate this car half way between their number 2 , which is called good condition, and considered by them to be the most common condition, and their number3 condition, which they describe as excellent, leaning towards number 2, ever so slightly. $12,500 is still low by quite a bit for even a Hagerty Number 2 car, let alone a car between 2 and 3. Of course, I have not inspected the car in person. Your comments about Connecticut dealers of classic cars having a reputation of being dishonest is rather surprising to me. I've lived here over 60 years, and can only name one, a Corvette guy, in Bolton, who is whacked in the head from sniffing to much resin over the years, in my experience with him. Being in the hobby for all of my adult life, I would think I would have heard of a lot more than just that one guy, to justify your rather sweeping accusation that most Connecticut classic car dealers fall under this dark cloud you have painted. In fact, my only bad experiences in buying classic cars, and I have owned and still own many, were all from out of state, and involved private parties rather than dealers. My dealer experiences have been excellent in all cases. The internet assures that now a days.

Sorry forget the headlight question wrong year lol!! The car is nice just asking about the windows and ac stuff so I can source parts if nec this car is in great shape for 50 years !! I have a 62 chev pickup and I get lots of people making remarks they forget it’s 60 years old man lol!!

@Y2Koolvette – No offense V6sctbird, but I can assure you, from many years of buying classic cars and 71-73 Mustangs particularly, (essentially a Cougar is a Stang with different trim for those of you who may wonder why I'm commenting from the Mustang point of view), this 72 Cougar is worth a lot more than your 12K offer. There are places to look for rust in these cars, that tell the entire story of how it's been kept. I can see in these pictures, this car was well cared for and has no serious rust problems. I had a 73 Sportsroof that was my first of many 71-73 Stangs, that I bought one year old with only 12,000 miles on it. It had NEVER been driven in salt or snow, and it still had the quarters rot behind the rear wheels, albeit only a baseball sized cut out was required to repair both sides. Ford used crap metal on these cars and they rot just looking at them the wrong way, so a minor rust repair means nothing. I currently have an original other than paint 72 Mustang convertible with 28K, and guess what, the seat needs repair. These cars are 50 years old man, what do you expect !?? ...

I respect your opinion. That is the great thing about a free market. Individuals can determine what value an item has to them. The dealer that has the car for sale was asking more than #1 money for a car that isn’t even a #3. After receiving the inspection I was sorely disappointed as I think you would be if you saw the car in person. If you want to sell a car for real value you can at least replace the tires that are old enough to legally drink. I considered what the car needs to be around or slightly better than a #2 and determined my value for the car. I would gladly give any seller max dollars for a car that deserves it. It seems to me the car is misrepresented after I talked to the inspector and saw the report. I hope that someone gets the car for what they feel is a good deal.

50 years old and very solid I will take some more pictures of the vehicle and submit - store in heated garage for 20 plus years tried to show all angles of the vehicle as well as minor flaws

I had this car inspected by Rich with Classic Wheels while it was listed for sale on the dealership website. I recommend anyone interested have an inspection done. The seller is not disclosing the rust in the right quarter that was covered up and not repaired among other issues. Seat repair, cracked evaporator box, ect. At the time I had it inspected the seller had not even made sure all of the lights functioned.
