OVERVIEW
This 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster is a custom-built replica that rides on a tubular chassis and is powered by an upgraded 1,600cc Volkswagen flat-four paired with a manual transaxle. Equipment includes 15-inch Boyd Coddington wheels, VDO gauges, and powertrain upgrades such as a Gene Berg straight-cut cam gear set, forged aluminum pistons, a Bosch distributor, and more. Finished in black over a two-tone gray vinyl and cloth interior, this 356 replica is now offered with an accompanying Carson aluminum hardtop, a canvas Haartz tonneau cover, build records, and a clear Florida title in the seller’s name.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
This fiberglass-bodied 356 Speedster replica was reportedly custom-built by Classic Motor Works and Hot Rods by Boyd Coddington. The exterior was painted black and accentuated with nose, fender, and tail badging; black headlight surrounds; a frameless windshield; dual side mirrors; and slim integrated taillights.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Boyd Coddington aluminum 15-inch wheels are wrapped in tires with black sidewall lettering.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The interior is fitted with two-tone gray vinyl and cloth bucket seats up front, split by a matching carpeted console and flanked by fabric and vinyl door panels. Additional features include a black dashboard, a Momo steering wheel, and lap belts.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Vehicle information is conveyed through a set of modern VDO-branded gauges that includes a 120-mph speedometer, 7K-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary readouts for the fuel level and other vehicle vitals. The digital odometer reads 1,313 miles, but the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The rear-mounted 1,600cc Volkswagen flat-four received an oil change approximately 200 miles ago per the seller. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a console-shifted Porsche 911 manual transaxle. A list of engine build components is as follows:
- 39.5mm intake valve, 35mm exhaust valve
- Gene Berg forged flywheel nut and washer
- Autocraft roller rocker assembly
- Engle FK camshaft
- Steel Gene Berg straight-cut cam gear set
- Gene Berg 30mm cast iron oil pump
- New 69mm crankshaft
- Forged aluminum Cima pistons
- Heavy-duty valve springs
- Titanium valve spring retainers
- Bosch distributor
- AS41 dual-relief engine case
- Dual 44 IDF Weber carburetors
- Dual oil coolers with factory offsets
- Rapid cooler at the air inlet
UNDERCARRIAGE
The chassis consists of a custom tubular setup with a four-wheel independent suspension and coil springs at the front and rear. Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The vehicle bears a placard with an Arizona-assigned identification number. The sale includes build records, a Carson aluminum hardtop, and a snap-on Haartz tonneau cover. The seller has posted a video below that shows the vehicle idling.

@bobcann – Sorry forgot one thing do you have any undercarriage pictures?? ...
Dont have any, cant really crawl under there. Will try to get it up on ramps tomorrow and get you some pics.
@bobcann – Does the car run well and do you think it reliable enough for a 2000km road trip home? Also does it have heat and defrost? ...
Although the car runs great, I would not drive any classic car that far until I know the car well. Does not have a heater or defrost, assume you could add one.
