Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This restored 1968 Pontiac GTO has been with the seller since 2011 and is powered by a 400ci V8 backed by a four-speed manual transmission. Features include power brakes, bucket seats, a center console, and an AM radio. Finished in Starlight Black over a black vinyl interior, this GTO is available now and comes with receipts, restoration photos, Pontiac Historic Services documentation, and a Vermont Registration Certificate.

EXTERIOR - FEATURES

During the restoration, the body was media-blasted to bare metal, then disassembled for repairs. The rear quarter panels, door skins, package tray, and cowl were replaced with reproduction parts. According to the seller, all rust damage was repaired using the correct gauge of sheet metal and MIG-welded. The welds and body seams were treated with rust inhibitor and sealed. The bodywork was covered with self-etching primer and polyester high-build primer, then block-sanded and disassembled again for the application of two-stage Sherwin-Williams Starlight Black paint. Following that, the panels were wet-sanded and buffed before being put back together. Exterior features include a color-keyed Endura front bumper, hide-away headlights, hood scoops, wheel well and rocker trim, GTO emblems, and a rear-mounted retractable antenna.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of gray 14-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels with chrome center caps and stainless trim rings is wrapped in 225/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

INTERIOR - FEATURES

The front bucket seats, rear seat, trim, and door panels are upholstered in black vinyl.  Features include a center console that houses a storage compartment and a manual transmission shifter, simulated woodgrain accents, an AM radio, manual steering, power brakes, and manual windows.

INTERIOR - GAUGES

A 120-mph speedometer, a clock, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for the coolant temperature, oil pressure, generator, and brakes are located ahead of the driver. The odometer reads 148 miles, which the seller states reflects the number of miles logged since the restoration was completed. The true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a 400ci V8 and backed by a four-speed manual transmission. Underhood features include a metallic light blue engine block, heads, and intake; chrome valve covers; a black air cleaner with a chrome lid; and a windshield washer.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This GTO was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. A full-length dual exhaust system exits at the rear through two outlets. Braking is provided by power drums.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Restoration receipts and photos and Pontiac Historic Services documents, including the original dealer invoice, a reproduction window sticker, and supporting documents, will come with the purchase of the car. It is offered with a Vermont Registration Certificate since Vermont does not issue titles for vehicles that are more than 15 years old.

@1gmman – You mention the the restoration was just recently completed. The photos look great! Was it painted in lacquer or base clear? Who did the restoration work? ...

The car is painted with basecoat/ clearcoat urethane by Sherwin Williams. I did almost all of the restoration work personally, some of the more involved tasks were done professionally like engine machining, electrical and tasks that required specialized equipment to restore.

I totally understand. As described earlier, the Vermont Registration is the ownership document for cars that are 15 years old for that state and totally legal to transfer ownership with this document, you can verify this with your DMV of your state or contact AutoHunter. I am totally willing to work within the comfort level of the buyer and can transfer the Vermont registration to a New Mexico title in my name prior to the transaction, if necessary to secure a deal.

@mdgrbn62 – As the restoration has just recently been completed in December 2022, I have not had the opportunity to attend a show yet. I certainly would like to if it doesn't find a new home, possibly the GTOAA nationals. ...

I really like your car, but this no title and Vermont registration with you in New Mexico has me a bit concerned. Is there something that you can show or tell me to put my concerns to rest?

@wadoo – Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I throw my hat in. I'd never new that a car older then 15 year did not require a title in Vermont, I had to call the DMV here in my home state to find out all the procedures I would need to take care of if I were to purchase a car registered in Vermont. You mentioned that you were not a Dealer, would you mind sharing how your GTO came to be in NM? Thanks. ...

The car spent most of its life in California, manufactured in the Fremont, CA plant and delivered and sold in a West LA dealership. I purchased the car from the last California owner in 2011 with a bill of sale only, no title was available or on record in CA at that time. I reside in Albuquerque, NM and the car has been here since then. The Vermont registration was the easiest way for me to gain legal ownership as you do not need to be a resident of Vermont to do so. I did not elect to transfer to a New Mexico title due to the selling of the car.
