OVERVIEW
This 1980 Pontiac Firebird Limited Edition Turbo Trans Am Official Pace Car with 3,460 kilometers (2,150 miles) on it was built to commemorate the 1980 Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 races. It is powered by a turbocharged 4.9-liter V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission and a Positraction rear end. According to the build sheet, this F-body was originally delivered to Smyl Motors Ltd in St. Paul, Alberta, and it has been with the Canada-based seller for 15 years. Equipment includes removable T-tops, power disc brakes, power steering, and a newer heater core. Finished in Cameo White with multicolor accents over an Oyster vinyl and cloth interior, this Trans Am is now offered with build documentation, owner's booklets, T-top bags, uninstalled pace car decals with instructions, the removed original heater core and gearshift bezel, and Canadian registration.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
The Cameo White body is accented with silver trim for the bumpers, mirror caps, and upper body. Additional exterior features include red and black accent striping; a black, silver, gray, and red Firebird hood graphic; front and rear fender flares; quad headlights; "Turbo 4.9" hood decals; removable T-tops; a rear spoiler; and a quad-outlet exhaust system. There are two small dents noted on the trunk.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
The original color-keyed 15-inch aluminum wheels are wrapped in the original 225/70 Goodyear Polysteel Radial raised-white-letter tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The cockpit is fitted with Oyster vinyl and fabric high-back bucket seats up front, matching seats in the rear, and gray materials for the dash, carpeting, and center console. The instrument panel is trimmed with engine-turned aluminum. Amenities include air conditioning, a Delco radio, a passenger-side grab-handle, cruise control, a tilt steering column, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted glass, power windows, a power-opening decklid, a rear defroster, a lighted glove compartment, and a space-saver tire in the trunk. The seller notes that the gearshift bezel has been replaced.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation includes a 140-km/h speedometer, a 6K-rpm tachometer, hood-mounted boost indicators, a clock, and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The odometer reads 3,460 kilometers (2,150 miles), which the seller reports to be accurate. They add that the oil pressure gauge reads high.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The turbocharged 4.9-liter V8 was rated at 210 horsepower and 345 lb-ft of torque when new. It came factory-equipped with an engine block heater, according to the build sheet. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.08:1 Positraction rear end. According to the seller, the engine, transmission, and rear differential are original. They also note that the vehicle runs well and the original heater core and battery have been replaced.
UNDERCARRIAGE
The chassis uses a Radial Tuned Suspension. Steering is power-assisted. Stopping is performed by power disc brakes.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The sale includes build documentation, owner's booklets, T-top bags, uninstalled pace car decals with instructions, and the removed original heater core and gearshift bezel.

Some videos of the car have been added today showing a start up, accessories, engine running and exhaust. Enjoy!!
Understanding original vehicle documentation is important I did some searching over last few days and found that there should be documents under the driver seat and on top of the gas tank. Not sure what these documents are for or say but I thought I’d see if my car had them. See attached pictures.
@Mike01 – Given it’s a weekend, there is likely no time to inspect this car….wondering if you have done a compression test on the engine or pressure tested the turbo? Also does the A/C blow cold? Beautiful car… ...
Hi. I have not done any compression testing or turbo pressure checks. I checked the AC today and it is not blowing cold. I did charge the AC 15 years ago but hadn’t really checked it since then.
I bought a New 1978 loaded, White with T-Tops, NY Engine, CB Radio with a PA speaker under the hood, a Fuzzbuster, 6 speakers and a graphic equalizer booster. Moved from NY to CA after college and drove cross country. Packed the car to the hilt. Came up to a redneck, tall pickup truck with a rifle in the back window around TN. We raced side by side and got it up to around 110 mph. We were neck and neck and I was surprised it would not go any faster. We thought he must be a liquor runner because we could not beat it. Otherwise a great car. I paid $6950 in Jan of 1978. T-Top leaked and the odometer did not work when I bought it (new) so after a 2.5 month, long drive to CA, GM sent it to local L.A. dealer to be reinstalled. Free mileage after driving cross country. People would wave to me in that car. Thank you Burt... If you see one with 6 speakers, that was mine. Enjoy!!!!
