1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile

OVERVIEW

This 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile receives power from a newer 1.6-liter flat-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. It comes with import paperwork dating back to its German origins and features a modular sleeping and sitting area, wooden cabinetry, a stainless steel sink, a refrigerator, and newer Yokohama tires. Finished in burgundy over a tan vinyl interior, this Type 2 is now offered with manuals, service records, uninstalled replacement body panels, uninstalled original curtains, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The older burgundy paint job shows patina, minor rust, cosmetic blemishes, and touch-ups. The roof has an opening for a pop-up camper which has been covered and reportedly does not leak. Exterior features include white bumpers with guards, dual side mirrors, the reportedly original glass, newer marker lamps, and louvered opening side windows.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Steel 14-inch wheels with VW-branded hubcaps are wrapped in 195/75 Yokohama tires that were installed last October.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The interior is fitted with tan vinyl bucket seats up front, which are matched to the headliner and contrast with the black dash and rubber flooring. Driver controls include a heater and a radio. The rear passenger compartment is accessible by a sliding door on the passenger side. Features include gray carpeting, a stainless steel sink, cabinetry, a refrigerator, a retractable table, and vinyl cushions with lap belts. The seating arrangement can be reconfigured as a bed. According to the seller, the horn, wipers, radio, blinkers, marker lights, and headlights work.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

The VDO-branded instrumentation includes a 90-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 70,900 miles, but the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The replacement rear-mounted 1.6-liter flat-four was installed in 1991. More recent work includes the replacement of the fuel lines and spark plugs, an oil change, and a safety inspection. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted four-speed manual transaxle. The seller notes that there is a small oil leak.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The brakes have been replaced. The seller notes the presence of surface rust on the frame.
