1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

OVERVIEW

This restored 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is powered by an L35 396ci V8 backed by a four-speed manual transmission. Features include power steering, wood rim steering wheel and Cragar mags. Finished in Butternut Yellow with black vinyl interior, this one-owner Chevelle is available now and comes with the original three-speed transmission and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

During the restoration in 2008, the exterior was refinished in the original color of Butternut Yellow (code Y). Features include front bumper guards, black grille with SS 396 emblem, SS hood, black lower-body treatment and racing stripes, driver-side rear-view mirror, rear antenna and rear black-out panel.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 15 x 7-inch Cragar wheels is wrapped in P215/65/R15 Cooper Cobra radial GT tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

This 1968 SS 396 features a black vinyl front bench seat. Features include power steering, manual brakes, AM/FM/cassette stereo, three-spoke steering wheel with wood rim, manual windows and floor-mounted manual transmission shifter.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

The instrument panel consists of a 120-mph speedometer, gas gauge and idiot lights. An aftermarket tachometer has been added to the steering column. According to the selling dealer, the odometer reads 34,800 miles, but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a 325-horsepower L35 396ci V8 backed by a manual four-speed transmission. Engine features include chrome valve covers and air cleaner, mild camshaft and Hooker headers. Period-correct power steering was added in 2013. The engine and transmission were rebuilt in 2008.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Chevelle is factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear-drive axle. Braking is provided by manual four-wheel drums. A dual exhaust system exits at the rear. The rear axle was rebuilt in 2008. Additional photos of the undercarriage can be found in the carousel to the right.
