Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 was initially delivered to Handley Ford in Washington, D.C and has been driven about 5,000 miles since the completion of a reportedly $80,000+ rotisserie restoration in 2013. It receives power from a rebuilt 428cid Cobra Jet V8 mated to a rebuilt C6 three-speed automatic transmission and a rebuilt limited-slip rear end. Features include power steering, power brakes, an AM radio, a newer dual exhaust system, and Magnum 500 wheels. Finished in Calypso Coral over a black vinyl interior, this Mustang is now offered by the selling dealer with restoration documentation, a Marti report, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

In 2013, the SportsRoof exterior was refinished in its original color of Calypso Coral (color code 1) with a black hood stripe. The chrome and weatherstripping were replaced during the restoration process. Exterior features include a chin spoiler, a hood scoop, color-keyed mirror caps, ribbed rocker moldings, rear window louvers, a rear spoiler, Mach 1 badging, and a newer dual exhaust system.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Magnum 500 14-inch front and 15-inch rear wheels with black pockets are wrapped in 225/70R14 front and 255/60R15 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The cabin is fitted with black vinyl bucket seats with knitted inserts (trim code 3A) up front and a bench in the rear, matched to the door panels, dash pad, and carpeting. Additional amenities include power steering, a Philco push-button AM radio, a heater, woodgrain trim, Ford-branded rubber floor mats, and a trunk-mounted full-size spare tire. According to the selling dealer, this car came equipped with air conditioning but the system has been removed.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and supporting gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer has rolled over and reads 1,430 miles, which equates to 101,430 miles.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The Q-code 428cid Cobra Jet V8 was rebuilt, equipped with new internals, and upgraded with headers and a performance camshaft 5,000 miles ago. Recent maintenance carried out in spring 2023 included an oil change, a chassis lube, and a battery replacement. Power is sent to the back wheels via a rebuilt C6 three-speed automatic transmission and a rebuilt nine-inch limited-slip rear end with 3.73:1 gears. The selling dealer notes that the transmission retains its cast iron tail shaft.

UNDERCARRIAGE

Handling is assisted by power brakes.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The selling dealer has provided a three-minute walk-around video below that shows the exterior, interior, and engine bay while the vehicle idles. Restoration documentation and a Marti report will come with the purchase of the car.

@ovaljoe – You said it had a camshaft change out ? What did you replace it with (Mechanical or Hydraulic kit) ? I don't know if anybody else caught the video but it sounds like there is a bad header leak or valve train noise. I would hate to say it's rod knock....I have a original '64 Holman & Moody 427 8V Side Oiler all standard and has a solid lifter camshaft in my Super Performance MK III Cobra and it makes some valve train noise. So that's why I was bring it up to the future bidders. Thank you for letting me high lite this area... Other than that it's a super clean Mach 1 ... Good Luck on your sale and meets your reserve.......Joe H. ...

It is a digital video, they seem to pick up all kinds of noise and make every engine sound bad. As far as the camshaft goes, we are unsure if solid or hydraulic it is listed as a performance cam.
