OVERVIEW
This Callaway-upgraded 1987 Chevrolet Corvette coupe is #142 of 184 produced in its model year. It has been driven approximately 29,000 miles since new and receives power from a twin-turbo L98 5.7-liter V8 mated to a Doug Nash 4+3 manual overdrive transmission. It received a $12,000 mechanical overhaul in the summer of 2020 and has been driven fewer than 500 miles since then. Equipment includes air conditioning, four-wheel disc brakes, a removable glass roof panel, a rebuilt digital instrument panel, and a dual exhaust system. Finished in Dark Red Metallic over a Saddle leather interior, this C4 Corvette comes with service records, an owner’s manual, a Callaway Engineering certificate of authenticity, the original radio, a California Smog Check Vehicle Inspection Report, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
Under the direction of Callaway Engineering in Old Lyme, Connecticut, this Dark Red Metallic C4 Corvette was cosmetically upgraded when new with a ducted hood, special badging, and unique dual exhaust outlets. Exterior features include pop-up headlights, vented front fenders, a removable tinted glass roof panel, and Callaway B-pillar badging. The original paint has a minor crack in one of the hood ducts and checking on the rear end.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Aluminum 16-inch wheels are wrapped in 255/50ZR16 BFGoodrich tires that the seller states are three years old.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The two-seat cockpit is fitted with power-adjustable Saddle leather buckets, matched to the door panels, carpeting, center armrest, and lower dash panels. The remainder of the cabin is trimmed in black. Features include embroidered floor mats, power windows, power locks, power steering, an aftermarket radio, and air conditioning. A Callaway Engineering placard on the center console identifies this C4 as unit #142 of 184 produced. There is some cracking on one side of the driver's seat per the seller.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
The digital display was rebuilt three years ago and contains an 85-mph speedometer, a 6,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary readouts for the oil pressure, instantaneous fuel economy, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit mechanical odometer currently reads about 29,000 miles, which is in line with the last figure of 27,953 miles logged in the CARFAX report in January 2022.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The twin-turbocharged L98 5.7-liter V8 was rated at 345 horsepower with the Callaway-installed equipment. In the summer of 2020, a $12,000 service at Callaway in Temecula, California included an oil change along with the replacement of the fuel pump, water pump, ignition module, spark plugs and wires, oil pressure sender, gaskets, serpentine belt, oil cooler lines, and PCV hose. Additionally, the CARFAX report shows that a major service was performed approximately five years ago within the last 3,000 miles. Work at that time included the replacement of the clutch, release bearing, oil filter adapter seal, fuel injection rail seals, starter, and antenna. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a Doug Nash 4+3, which operates as a traditional four-speed manual transmission with automatic overdrive on the top three gears.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes. The 2020 service included the replacement of the brake master cylinder and associated fluids. The car was aligned and the shock absorbers were replaced in 2018, according to the CARFAX report.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The CARFAX report begins in 1990 and shows no history of accidents or damage over the vehicle’s lifetime in California and Oregon. A California emissions inspection was performed in January 2022. The stock radio will come with the car, along with an owner’s manual, service records, a California Smog Check Vehicle Inspection Report, and a Certificate of Authenticity from Callaway Cars showing build details and an original delivery date of July 22, 1987.
