Vehicle Story

This 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T convertible is one of 519 produced and was rotisserie restored by a collector in 2010, after which the car won a 2017 America Graffiti Award. After acquiring the car in 2015, the seller spent the next four years further restoring the car while improving drivability. Both the original 440 Magnum V8 and 727 Torqueflite transmission were rebuilt to factory specifications, with the former retaining the original carburetor and manifolds. Additional work included installing an Accurate Exhaust brand OE-style exhaust and mufflers, replacement date-coded glass, custom aluminum four-core radiator, aftermarket disc brakes with slotted rotors, and more. This fifth-generation Coronet R/T is offered with receipts for the restoration and a clear Montana title in the seller's name.

The exterior is finished in Racing Green Metallic (GG1 and 661) with red stripes R/T tail stripes. The majority of the original sheet metal was retained, except for the replacement of the trunk pan extensions. The black convertible top was sourced from Legendary Auto, and new old stock parts include chrome trim, grille, headlight bezels, rear taillight assembly, side markers, fender turn indicators, and wheel well moldings.

All glass has been replaced with date-coded replacements, along with the rear window. Other modifications include the replacement of the 14" factory wheels with 17” billet Magnum 500 items, which are currently wrapped in Redline tires.

Black vinyl covers the front buckets and rear bench, and the original "Buddy Seat" is included in the sale. Instruments include a 150 mph speedometer, as seen through the wood grain steering wheel, and an AM radio. The power convertible top operates with no issues, with the motor and hydraulic lines recently replaced.

The odometer shows 42k miles, 270 of which have been added by the seller since 2015. A full-size spare is located in the trunk.

Power is provided by a rebuilt Chrysler RB-series 440ci Magnum V8 mated to a rebuilt 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission, both of which are matching-numbers and honed to original specifications. Work performed under previous ownership included the heads being redone, the valves ground, the crank polished, and new pistons, rods, cams, lifters, rings, bearings, seals, and more. The original Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetor and manifolds have been refreshed, and the original 8 3/4 3.23:1 "Sure-Grip" rear differential has been rebuilt as well. The car came factory equipped with power steering, while modifications include a custom aluminum, black powder-coated 4-core radiator with matching shroud and a quad-electric fan setup. No modifications were made to the core support, and an idling temperature of 180 degrees can be maintained in 110-degree heat, per the seller. In addition, the original radiator will go with the car.

The car is equipped with power steering, and aftermarket disc brakes on slotted rotors have been added. Other installed improvements have included an Accurate Exhaust brand OE-style exhaust system and mufflers. Additional underside photos are available in the gallery.

A file of receipts will be included with the sale, along with photo documentation of the comprehensive restoration, a reproduction window sticker, and various display information.

@360burnout – Nice upgrade on the radiator! Idling at 180 in 110 temps is impressive. ...

Thanks man! I set the car up for the annual American Graffiti car cruise and it’s several hours of crawling traffic with stop & go and some years it’s triple digits. You see lots of cars overheating on the side of the road and I didn’t want to have to worry about staring @ the thermometer. The amazing craftsman @ Wizard Cooling custom built the 4-core radiator for me to fit in the OE core support. They also designed the shroud and quad SPAL brand fan setup and it’s extremely efficient. I had it all powder coated black to match OE. The original radiator was also restored and comes with the sale of the car should the next owner want to revert back to stock specs

@Fasttopless – Previous owner......Very nice car, Glad to see the upgraded brakes, One of my few complaints with the car. Do like original, so not excited withe the wheels, but that's a personal thing. I thought the 500's were in fairly good shape. Good luck to the seller, Great car. ...

Hey there fasttopless! Glad to hear from you and especially that you approve of the disc brake upgrade. What a world of difference it made in the drivability and enjoyment of the car. As for the wheels they were in rough shape so I opted for larger billet versions of the magnum 500s . Repop 14” magnum 500s from summit racing or JEGS are available in the wheel vintiques brand for $149/ea if next owner would prefer that look. The billet aluminum 500s that are currently on the car could be sold to cover the replacement cost, as they were $350/ea and are in mint condition

@MikeyJ – Thank you for the details. It looks great. Can you tell me what is hanging down between the rear axle and the gas tank? It can be seen from three ground level shots at left rear, right front and front. ...

Great eye man! Those outdoor pics were taken last August in Cali before I shipped her to WV and the exhaust tailpipe had come loose from the muffler. Later that day when I got it back to my shop from the photo shoot...I took care of refitting the pipe to muffler and tightened the loose clamp. If you reference the extensive chassis pics in the gallery...that I took last week in WV for this auction...everything is copacetic. You’re more than welcome to come to my warehouse and inspect the car top to bottom if you’d like....just message me and we can set it up no prob

@plymouth – Thanks for your interest Mikey! When I took ownership of the car the paint was in excellent condition that I’d call Show quality. Prep was excellent, and shows no sign of lifting or bubbling. The quality of workmanship was excellent I’m a perfectionist and since this was personal car I wanted it to look its very best! When I use the term paint correction I’m referring to high end professional color “wet” sanding with 2000-3000 grit 3M paper to remove any super fine “imperfections” in the clear coat which also removes any residual “orange peel” due to excessive clear. Then we performed a 3-stage polishing process with 3M compound and finished off with Rupes brand Quartz paint sealant to create a super high luster and protects the paint finish. We spent close to 80hrs on the exterior polishing aka paint correction process to take it to a level seen on very fine custom cars ...

@DannnyInNJ – Will the original 14" wheels be included? Do you have any photos of them available? ...

Unfortunately no...the magnum 500s were severely pitted and unworthy of restoration particularly when reproduction 14” & 15” magnum 500s are available in the aftermarket I upgraded to 17” billet aluminum wheels for a more modern look paired with radial redlines for smooth cruising

Coronet RT drop top Quick ownership history: Purchased new in Greensburg PA where it resided until undergoing an 8yr comprehensive professional restoration which was completed in 2013. After restoration in Pennsylvania (Mopar capital of the world!) it was purchased by a man in WA state who owned it for 2yrs. I acquired the car in the summer of 2015 in WA and brought it down to Sacramento, CA where it resided until the fall of 2020 when it was relocated to my new shop in Morgantown WV. It was my personal local cruise car for the annual American Graffiti event in Modesto, CA. At my restoration shop in CA, I thoroughly went through the car with a comprehensive detail and paint correction, and tended to and upgraded many mechanical aspects for reliability and drivability. I spared no expense to bring this to the highest standard since it’s my personal car. This RT drop top has been very well sorted, and starts, runs, drives and stops extremely well. I would not hesitate taking her for a long cruise anywhere. Due to NorCal’s excessive summer heat I upgraded some cooling and braking components to ensure better drivability and to protect the powertrain . This RT has an incredible amount of original parts down to the original numbers windshield washer reservoir. All OE parts that were removed have been retained and come with the sale of the car to the next owner. Don’t hesitate to shoot me any questions Thanks for checking this R/T out...happy bidding!
