OVERVIEW
This 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang is #6 of 252 "Carryover" fastbacks produced for the model year. Like the other cars in its production run, it started life as a 1965 Mustang and was equipped with a combination of 1965 and 1966 GT350 exterior, interior, and performance components. When it was initially configured, this GT350 did not have stripes and came with steel wheels, rear over-rider traction bars, a fiberglass hood with a steel frame, and a rear package shelf, making this one of 78 "Carryover" cars with that storage area instead of a back seat. It was shipped on October 28, 1965 to Don Wagner Ford Sales, Inc. in Vandalia, Ohio. After passing through a series of owners, it was purchased by Curt Vogt of Cobra Automotive Inc. in Wallingford, Connecticut, and given new front bodywork, a new drivetrain, and other new parts. The current owner bought this GT350 in 2015 and reportedly won Best of Show and the Barrett-Jackson award with it at the 2017 Vail Automotive Classic. Power is provided by a Hi-Po 289cid V8 and delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Features include 15-inch Shelby/Cragar wheels, a Detroit Locker rear axle, a woodgrain steering wheel, and KONI shock absorbers. Finished in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue Le Mans stripes over a black vinyl interior, this GT350 comes from the selling dealer with a 2017-issued 1966 Shelby Registry Report from Howard C. Pardee of the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) and a clear title.
EXTERIOR - FEATURES
As #6 of the 252 "Carryover" Shelby GT350 Mustangs made for the 1966 model year, this car originally came with 1965 GT350 wheels and suspension and interior parts as well as 1966 GT350 components, including clear Plexiglas rear-quarter windows, functional rear brake-cooling scoops, and rear exhaust turndowns. During the 2007 restoration by Curt Vogt of Cobra Automotive Inc., it was equipped with a new front body clip among other required parts. In its present form, SFM6S006 is finished in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue Le Mans stripes. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, hood pins, a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, and "G.T. 350" lettering and badging.
EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES
The 15-inch five-spoke Shelby/Cragar wheels are wrapped in P215/65R15 front and P235/60R15 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.
INTERIOR - FEATURES
The cabin is furnished with black vinyl front bucket seats and a 1966-specific black rear parcel shelf in place of the rear seat. Interior elements from the 1965 model-year GT350 include the black dash pad, black concave glove box door, and black pleated door panels. The list of 1966 model-year GT350 components includes the instrument cluster, dash-mounted tachometer, and simulated woodgrain steering wheel with a Cobra center emblem. Other features include quarter windows, manual windows, manual steering, lap belts, and a radio delete. The trunk contains a patterned vinyl mat and a spare tire.
INTERIOR - GAUGES
Vehicle information is displayed on a 140-mph speedometer, dash-mounted 9,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, amps, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 56,786 miles.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Under the hood is a Hi-Po 289cid V8 that sends power to the back wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a Detroit Locker rear axle. When new, the engine was painted gloss black instead of Ford Blue like other 1966 GT350s; the official output was 306 horsepower and 329 ft-lb of torque. Engine bay features include "hollow-letter" rocker covers, an export brace, and a Monte Carlo bar. The vehicle serial number of SFM6S006 starts with the "Carryover"-specific SFM6S prefix and indicates this is car #6 in the production run.
UNDERCARRIAGE
According to the selling dealer, a new drivetrain was built and installed as part of the 2007 restoration. Suspension hardware consists of lowered front A-arms, over-rider rear traction bars, and KONI shock absorbers.
