OVERVIEW
This magazine-featured 1963 Dodge Polara 500 is one of seven hardtops built with the 426 Ramcharger Stage II engine. It is powered by a 426cid V8 with twin four-barrel Carter carburetors backed by a 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. Features include radio-delete, Casler cheater slicks, a trunk-mounted battery, MSD electronic ignition system, heater, and windshield washer system. Finished in red over a black vinyl interior, this Polara 500 comes with date-coded AAQA engine block, numbers-matching Max Wedge automatic transmission, two carburetor velocity stacks with screens and foam seals, the original wheels and hubcaps, Galen Govier paperwork, Darrell Davis 1963 Dodge 426 Ramcharger book, automotive magazines, car history documents, owner’s manuals, and New York registration.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
Originally finished in Turquoise metallic (code A), the body was completely refinished in red in 1975. Features include chrome bumpers, a chrome grille, Max Wedge hood scoop, rocker and wheel well trim, and side trim. The seller states that the driver-quality paint has imperfections, but is in good condition overall.
EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES
A pair of American Racing five-spoke wheels with Peerless radial tires is mounted in the front; red steel wheels wrapped in Casler cheater slicks are in the rear. The seller states that the rear tires show dry rot and should be replaced.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The front bucket seats and the rear seat are upholstered in black vinyl. Features include manual windows and steering, push-button TorqueFlite automatic, center console with storage compartment, heater, and radio-delete.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
A 120-mph speedometer and factory gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, and alternator are located ahead of the driver. An 8,000-rpm tachometer is mounted on top of the dashboard. A set of three aftermarket Stewart-Warner gauges for the oil pressure, amps, and water temperature is located under the dashboard. The odometer reads 52,696 miles, which the seller reports to be accurate.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Power is provided by a Stage II Max Wedge 426cid V8 with 11:1 compression and a cross-ram intake with twin four-barrel Carter carburetors. The engine is backed by a 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. An oil change was completed in June 2023.
UNDERCARRIAGE
This Dodge is equipped with an independent torsion bar front suspension and a solid rear drive axle with a 3.91 Sure-Grip differential. Braking is provided by four-wheel manual drums. A factory exhaust system with cutouts exits at the rear.
