OVERVIEW
This 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible received an exterior restoration within the last three years and is equipped with its reportedly original Cyclone 289cid V8 and four-speed manual transmission. It was reportedly Washington-owned long-term for nearly 40 years and comes with chrome brightwork, a fiberglass hood, a power-retractable top, whitewall tires, power steering, and woodgrain interior trim. Finished in Jamaican Yellow and equipped with a black top over a black vinyl interior, this second-generation Comet is now offered by the selling dealer with a clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
The Jamaican Yellow (code 8) body was repainted within the last three years under the direction of the selling dealer; some of the metal in the rear quarter panels and trunk and the floorboards were reportedly replaced at the same time. Features include stacked quad headlights, chrome bumpers, a fiberglass hood with dual air inlets, rocker trim, a driver-side mirror, a newer convertible top motor, and "Caliente" script badging on the rear quarters. The dealer notes that the soft top has been repaired in one area and the presence of corrosion on the rear bumper and the trim around the taillights.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Steel 14-inch wheels with deluxe covers are wrapped in whitewall tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The reportedly original interior has black (code 66) vinyl front and rear bench seats, coinciding with matching trim for the door panels, dash, newer carpeting, and lap belts. Features include power steering, woodgrain trim, manual-crank windows, and a heater. According to the dealer, the original push-button AM radio does not work.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation includes a central 120-mph speedometer bordered by gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, and amps. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 23,596 miles, but the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The two-barrel Cyclone 289cid V8 and floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission (code 5) are original to this car, according to the selling dealer. When new, the engine produced 200 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Braking is performed by manual drums. Power is delivered to the back wheels through the reportedly original 3.25:1 rear end (code 4).
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The dealer has provided a video showing the exterior, interior, an in-car driving segment, and a demonstration of the convertible top in operation.

@BackseatDriver – Kelly, buddy, if you’ve been driving this car every day, wouldn’t you know which gauges and accessories function instead of looking around at the dash trying to explain things as you drive? And also, I could tell just by the number of steering wheel rotations, taking a corner, that this car doesn’t have power steering - which it doesn’t as shown in the pictures. Not building any buyer’s confidence bud… ...
Sorry for the confusion. You are correct and I misspoke. The vehicle does NOT have power steering.
