Vehicle Story

This 1966 Datsun 1600 roadster is a California-black-plate, mechanically-sorted example complete with extensive service records, a replacement convertible top, and reupholstered interior. It is powered by a 1.6-liter inline-4 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and has participated in the Solvang Datsun Roadster Classic on numerous occasions. The car has been with the seller for six years and is finished in white over red vinyl. This 1600 is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in a white respray with a replacement black cloth convertible top.  Exterior features include chrome bumpers and trim and factory fog lamps.  Some body filler is present at the rear of the car, as are stress cracks in each door at the wing windows and a small crack in the windshield.

185/75 whitewall tires are mounted on factory 14” wheels with chrome hubcaps.

The interior is trimmed in reupholstered red vinyl with matching door panels and carpet, a black and gray dash, and an aluminum center console. All components are reported to function as designed aside from the hand brake, which is reported to be weak. A full-size spare tire with a cover is housed in the trunk.

Instrumentation is framed by a 3-spoke steering wheel and consists of a 120-mph speedometer, 7k tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and voltage. An analog clock is present above the toggle switches for the fog lamps and windshield wipers, and the 5-digit mechanical odometer is not working. True mileage is unknown.

The 1.6-liter inline-4 has been well maintained per the seller, and work performed under previous ownership included a rebuild of the carburetors and replacement of the brakes, master, clutch, and slave cylinders, and the fuel pump. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted shift lever.

Suspension work was performed under prior ownership.

The sale includes a removable hardtop and tonneau cover.

Thanks. To be clear, I was definitely highlighting the ugliest areas of the car with those photos, which may give the impression that it's overall a little rougher than it really is. Sure, it's a bit scruffy around the edges, but you are correct; it is a great driver!

@Burbach174 – A shot of the hardtop would be great and just a picture of the differential from the gas tank would be fine. And looking up from under the front bumper. ...

I’ve added some photos of the differential and front air dam area here. The diff is the stock unit. Also, photos of the hardtop finally uploaded. Thanks for your patience. Let me know if there are any other photos you’d like to see.

Bob Bondurant started his school with the Datsun 1600 and 2000s. This is a beautiful and well kept 1600!

I had one of these back in the early 70's. I think the lower windscreen is more visually attractive than the later Fairladys. These cars are tough as nails if maintenance is kept up.
