Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1968 Pontiac GTO Hardtop Coupe has received a complete restoration that encompassed the exterior, interior, brakes, suspension, and other mechanical components. It is equipped with a rebuilt 400cid V8 and a rebuilt Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission, both of which are reportedly numbers-matching. Features include a hood-mounted tachometer, Rally II wheels, wood dash trim, a Ram Air hood, and an aluminum intake manifold.  Finished in Mayfair Maize and equipped with a black vinyl top over a black vinyl interior, this second-generation GTO is now offered with PHS Historic Services documentation, a reproduction window sticker, an owner’s manual, build receipts, touch-up paint, uninstalled Hedman headers, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The exterior underwent a restoration in 2017 in which the body was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in PPG epoxy primer and Mayfair Maize paint. Features include an Endura front end, hideaway headlamps, Ram Air hood inlets, a newer black vinyl roof from American Rod & Automotive of Los Banos, California, rocker moldings, GTO decals, a newer chrome rear bumper, and a custom dual exhaust system. The seller states that there is a stone chip above the driver's door handle and there are cracks present on the front bumper.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Rally II five-spoke 15-inch wheels with PMD-branded center caps are wrapped in redline radial tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The cockpit was refurbished during the restoration and has black vinyl bucket seats up front, a bench in the rear, and matching materials for the door panels, dash, lap belts, headliner, sun visors, and carpeting. Features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a rebuilt steering column, a radio, a wood dash fascia, replaced weather stripping, a his-and-hers shifter, and a spare tire on a Rally wheel in the trunk. An air conditioning system is present, but the seller states that it needs to be recharged.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a hood-mounted tachometer, a clock, and gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 483 miles, although the seller states that the car has accrued 1,134 miles since the mechanical restoration was completed. The true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The reportedly numbers-matching 400cid V8 was rebuilt in 2019 by American Rod & Automotive under the seller’s five-year ownership. In addition, it was bored .030 over and built to Ram Air II specifications. Features include rebuilt Ram Air #48 cylinder heads, a mild camshaft, an aluminum intake manifold, a rebuilt Quadrajet carburetor, and a re-cored radiator. An oil change was performed in August 2023. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a reportedly numbers-matching, rebuilt Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission with a new torque converter and a 3.23-geared differential.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The suspension has been rebuilt under the seller’s ownership and features new springs, a heavy-duty front sway bar with bushings, new shocks, new bushings, ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, idler arm, and adjustment sleeves. The brake system received new wheel cylinders and shoes all the way around.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The sale will include documentation from PHS Historic Services, a reproduction window sticker, a reproduction build sheet, an owner’s manual, touch-up paint, restoration receipts, and an uninstalled set of ceramic-coated Hedman headers. The vehicle will need to be retrieved within five days of the sale.

What was the odometer mileage reading when you purchased the GTO in 2018? The current odometer at 000506.7 (per photo #51 showing odometer), and noting the listing comment made within the ' INTERIOR-GAUGES' paragraph, ie: ["The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 483 miles, although the seller states that the car has accrued 1,134 miles since the mechanical restoration was completed. The true mileage on the chassis is unknown."] - By using the current specified odometer reading at 000506.7, and subtracting the accrued 1,134.0 miles since the restoration was completed - would put the odometer reading at 99,372.7. If I read your comments right - in ___ of 2019, all the work noted under "ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION" was performed and completed by American Rod & Automotive, and prior to the noted accrued 1,134.0 miles which followed after completion of the mechanical restoration. But in you answer to "dasMoose" questions, you stated that less than 1,000 miles are on the engine and running gears. Confirm: You acquired the GTO in ___ /2018 Y/N? The restoration was started in ___ /2017 by previous owner Y/N , and completed by you in ___ /2022 Y/N , and its from this completion date ___ /2022, the 1,134.0 miles been accrued Y/N ? That still puts the odometer reading at time of your purchase on/near the 99,372.7+/- miles. So, we could assume we are on the second time around. By any chance, could the existing or new(?) odometer been reset to 000,000 due to the restoration and primarily the complete overhaul/rebuild of the engine and transmission ? I purchased a use 1964 GTO Convertible back in 2001, and one year later lost a lifter - then for the next 11 months, I completely rebuilt the entire engine and all components/accessories - I got approval and sent certification paperwork back to Oregon DMV to have the speedometer reset to 000,000. If I end up with ownership of this Pontiac GTO, that's exactly what I will do when I register her, file odometer reset certification.
