1957 Ford Thunderbird 3-Speed

OVERVIEW

This restored 1957 Ford Thunderbird is powered by a reportedly numbers-matching, rebuilt 292ci V8 backed by a rebuilt three-speed manual transmission with a newer clutch. Features include a matching removable hardtop, a rebuilt AM/FM radio with an internal amplifier, and several updated or rebuilt parts. Finished in Colonial White and equipped with a newer white vinyl manual convertible top over a black and white vinyl interior, this first-generation Thunderbird comes with an affidavit of ownership from the original owner, an owner's manual, a service manual, a car cover, and a clear title in the seller's name.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

Originally finished in Thunderbird Bronze (code Q) and equipped with a Colonial White hardtop (code E), this Thunderbird's body and top were repainted Colonial White during the frame-on restoration completed in the early 1990s. Features include chrome bumpers, a hood scoop, a fender-mounted antenna, side fresh air intakes, and color-keyed rear wheel skirts with stone guards. The manual white soft top was replaced in 2020. According to the seller, nicks are present in the exterior finish.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 14-inch black steel wheels with full hubcaps is wrapped in 205/75R14 BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall radial tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

Originally equipped with Copper vinyl upholstery (code XJ), the cabin is furnished with a bench seat covered in black and white vinyl and surrounded by black vinyl door panels and black trim. Features include manual windows and steering, a floor-mounted manual shifter, and a rebuilt radio converted to accept FM signal and equipped with an internal amplifier.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

A 140-mph speedometer, an inoperative 5,000-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature are located ahead of the driver. A non-tachometer drive distributor has been installed. According to the seller, all gauges have been cleaned and rebuilt. The odometer reads 34,160 miles, which the seller reports to be accurate.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a reportedly numbers-matching, rebuilt 292ci V8 and backed by a rebuilt three-speed manual transmission equipped with a clutch that was replaced in 2021. During the restoration, all underhood sheet metal was refinished in Colonial White. Features include polished cast aluminum valve covers, an upgraded carburetor, a correct air cleaner housing with a chrome lid, and an Optima REDTOP battery. An alternator has been installed and the steering box has been rebuilt. This car received a complete service within the last year that included the replacement of light bulbs, seals, and transmission seals. A new fuel pump was installed in August 2023.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Thunderbird was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. Braking is provided by manual four-wheel drums. The suspension has been upgraded with adjustable-height rear shocks. The rear bumper-exit exhaust system was replaced and new brake system hardware was installed in 2018. The seller states that slight rust is present on the undercarriage.
