Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1987 Ford Mustang convertible has been with the same family since 2014 but was cosmetically and mechanically customized by an Ohio-based shop under previous ownership. It is powered by a supercharged 347cid V8 backed by a TREMEC five-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Features include custom bodywork, a shaker hood scoop, power windows and locks, power steering, an adjustable Griggs Racing racing suspension, power four-wheel disc brakes, and a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system. Finished in Burgundy Mist and equipped with a power black vinyl power convertible top over a black leather interior, this garage-kept Mustang comes with a CARFAX report and a clear title in the seller's name.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The exterior is finished in Burgundy Mist with matte black stripes and equipped with a black vinyl power convertible top. Features include custom headlight covers, a fiberglass hood with custom hood pins and vents, a shaker hood insert, power mirrors with color-keyed caps, custom door and quarter panel flares, a rear spoiler, and custom taillights. The seller states that a very minor chip is present under the front bumper and on one of the side skirts. Exterior lighting check videos can be seen below.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 15-inch Weld Racing Rodlite polished aluminum wheels that were reportedly custom-built for this Mustang is wrapped in Yokohama AV1-40i 285/40ZR15 front and AV1-35i 345/35ZR15 rear radial tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The cabin is furnished with black leather front bucket seats and a matching rear seat surrounded by red and black vinyl door panels and trim. Features include power windows and locks, power steering, a tilt steering column, a center console-mounted manual transmission shifter, a black roll bar, a digital Sony Xplod AM/FM stereo, and nonfunctional air conditioning.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

A set of white-faced AutoMeter gauges that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 10,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, voltage, blower pressure, exhaust temperature, oil temperature, vacuum, fuel pressure, oil pressure, and water temperature are located ahead of the driver. With 9,000 miles added during the seller's family's nine-year ownership, the odometer reads 9,200 miles, but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown. A Not Actual Mileage title was first issued in August 2008. The last reported mileage of 8,936 miles was logged on the CARFAX report in July 2021.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a supercharged 347cid V8 and backed by a TREMEC close-ratio five-speed manual transmission. Engine bay features include aluminum valve covers, a Weiand 177 supercharger, a set of Ford Motorsport racing heads, a Ford Motorsport racing camshaft, Ford Motorsport racing roller lifters and rockers, an MSD electronic ignition system, and BBK Performance tube headers. According to the seller, the supercharger produces between 15 and 18 pounds of boost. This car was equipped with factory air conditioning, but some underhood components have been removed and it is currently not working. The battery has been moved to the trunk and is mounted in an aluminum box with a battery disconnect switch. The seller states that an oil change was completed in 2023. Videos of the engine running are available below.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Mustang is equipped with a Griggs Racing adjustable racing independent front suspension, an anti-bump steer kit, and an Auburn Gear locking solid rear drive axle with an aluminum TA Performance girdle differential cover. The rear axle is also equipped with 3.73:1 gearing and hardened spline axles. Braking is provided by Mustang Cobra power disc brakes. A Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system exits at the rear.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The CARFAX report starts in February 1987 and shows ownership in Michigan and Ohio. It also indicates the following events, which occurred before the vehicle was converted into its current state:

  • The vehicle was reported stolen and recovered in June 1989.
  • An accident that caused moderate damage to the right front section of the car was reported in April 1989.
  • Another accident was reported in October 1991 and involved contact with an animal.

@dharleyrider – I can see this high performance Mustang. Can AC still be made to work? ...

Thank you for your interest in our car, dharleyrider. The transformation of this unique Mustang occurred with the previous owner. This type of work is out of our wheelhouse, unfortunately! We transported the Cobra a few times to a few shows and never track ran her. This article may be helpful to your question: https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/add-air-conditoning-old-car-easy/
