OVERVIEW
This European-market 1962 Porsche 356B Carrera 2 GS (Grand Sport) was part of a private collection for 36 years and went through a 20-year restoration completed in December 2023. Power comes from a GT-specification Type 587/2 2.0-liter flat-four mated to a rebuilt four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes fog lamps, ventilated chrome wheels, a wood steering wheel, VDO gauges, and disc brakes. Finished in Silver Metallic over a Wine Red leather interior, this 356 is now offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, spare parts, and a clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
This 356B dates back to May 16, 1962, when it was assembled for the European market as a Carrera GS. It was later exported to California, becoming part of a long-term private collection. As part of the car’s 20-year restoration later in life, the Ivory (code 6204) body was taken down to bare metal by Porsche sheet metal fabricator Andy Elsener and repainted Silver Metallic (code 6206) by Jim Rinker. Features include fog lamps, replacement glass, a driver-side mirror, rear reflectors, a vented engine cover, and a center-exit single-outlet exhaust system.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Ventilated 15-inch chrome wheels with Porsche crest center caps are wrapped in 165HR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The Wine Red (code 9274) leather seating material was installed by Autos International of Escondido, California, replacing the car’s original black leather upholstery. The lap belts and carpeting are color-matched. Amenities include front buckets, dual rear seats with fold-down backrests, a wood steering wheel with an ebony inlay made by Bruce Crawford at Hardwood Classics, a push-button AM/FM radio, a VDO clock, and a perforated white headliner. The front cargo compartment contains a Vredestein spare tire on a chrome wheel.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
The VDO replacement instrumentation was sourced from North Hollywood Speedometer and includes a 160-mph speedometer, a centrally mounted 8,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level and oil temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 1 mile, although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The rear-mounted Type 587/2 GT-specification 2.0-liter flat-four was procured by Peter Hoffman of 356 Classic Parts and was reportedly built and tested by Jacques Le Friant. It features a custom wiring harness from YnZ’s Yesterdays Parts. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transaxle that was rebuilt by Jon Bunin of Werkstatt and equipped with a steel intermediate plate, as well as BBAB gears and a 12-bolt differential.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The car will come with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, an uninstalled rear valance, and uninstalled front and rear bumper guards.
