Vehicle Story

This 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL500 roadster is a two-owner, enthusiast-owned example with only 31k miles and powered by a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a COMAND navigation system, active suspension, and heated seats. The car was originally sold in March 2003 from Valley Motors, Inc. in Cockeysville, Maryland, and has resided in Maryland since new. Finished in Brilliant Silver over a charcoal two-tone leather interior, this SL500 is now offered with service records, spare parts, original books, extra keys, a cover, the original window sticker, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear Maryland title in the seller’s name.

The body retains its original Brilliant Silver (744) finish and has been garage-kept and fair-weather-driven since new according to the seller. It has a color-matched, power-operated retractable hardtop, and features fog lamps, vented front fenders with accent trim, and a polished dual exhaust system. The seller reports that the retractable top is functioning properly.

Factory-optioned 19” aluminum SL65 AMG wheels are wrapped in five-year-old Michelin Pilot Sport tires with about 50% tread life, and the original 17” alloy wheels will go with the car per the seller. An Active Body Control (ABC) active suspension aids handling, with an independent 4-link setup in the front and an independent 5-arm multi-link in the rear. Braking is handled by 4-wheel discs with Mercedes-branded calipers.

The interior is fitted with heated and 12-way power seats two-tone charcoal leather (201) seats, along with matching door panels, dash, and carpet. There is wood trim throughout the cabin, including the center stack and door panels. Amenities include a dual-zone automatic climate control system and an 8-speaker Bose audio system equipped with COMAND navigation and a 6-disc CD changer.

Instrumentation is framed by a multi-function steering wheel and consists of a 160-mph speedometer, 7k tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The digital odometer shows approximately 31k miles, which the seller asserts is accurate.

The 5.0-liter 24-valve V8 is original to the vehicle and has been well-maintained per the seller. It was factory-rated at 302 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque when new and is paired with a 5-speed electronic-touch-shift automatic transmission. An oil change was performed in October 2020, and the transmission was serviced in October 2017.

Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.

The CARFAX report shows no history of accidents or damage and a passing Maryland state emissions inspection in November 2019. The sale includes the original window sticker showing an MSRP of $89,055, the car’s original 17” wheels, a cover, and extra parts including oil, cabin filters, driving light bulbs, and service records. The seller indicates that there is Mercedes-Benz extended warranty coverage available for the brake system.

@Sptman – I have all the receipts from the Original owner and the cars codes addressed in warranty performed by Valley Motors noted in the Carfax reports. I have not experienced any electrical or engine oil , transmission or break leaks or breaking issues since my purchasre in 11/12 at 24,165 miles. As far as electrical the only problem I have had (other than both battery replacements) was in 9/2016 when a fault code in the alarm system was discovered and I had the alarm horn module replaced ( have repair order receipt) and no problem since. In 10/17 I noticed the shifter was hard to put in gear . Code fault revealed the magnetic shifter was failing and advised by service that it was a common problem on the Sl series. The shifter assembly was replaced (a part I was advised being external to the actual internal transmission guts) no problem since (receipt included) . I note that the only other failure since my ownership was the left Catalytic converter which began to rattle from time to time and I had that replaced also in 2018. In Sept . 2018 , I received a Mercedes -Benze Extended Warranty Addendum Letter ( included with sale) for the SBC/Electrohydraulic break system extending its warranty coverage to a total of 25 years and unlimited miles from the vehicle's original waranty start date ( car purched 3/08/03). It states the SBC coverage applies to the vehicle regardless of ownership and covers the break systems hydraulic control unit, hydraulic pump , pressure reservoir, break operating unit , front and rear wheel speed sensors break lamp switch and yaw rate sensor. I have had no problem with the breaks over the past 8 1/2 years I've owned the auto . Last maintenance service was performed in Oct .'20 (31,325 mi) at which time the oil and filter was changed , fuel filter replaced , all fluids checked and break pads and tires inspected all reported as being OK. Best I can relate as to my experience regarding your questions. ...

Thanks for that extensive and full bodied reply. I see that it passed emissions. Last question - I assume you have not had the car Maryland inspected (for Maryland's MVA registration purposes)? (I live in Maryland - about 15 miles from your location).

@TBirdHunter – Reviewing the Carfax report, the first owner had a series of service visits for electrical problems. Have you, the second owner, experienced any such problems, and if so please describe. Owner 1 experienced fluid leaks (2 reports, July 2009); have you Owner 2 experienced this problem (oil/antifreeze)? Also, the brake fluid was flushed (Feb 2005), but no mention was made about other brake components - in particular the wear and tear items, brake discs and pads. Any service? Please describe reason for the transmission check that occurred in October 2017 - what problem was experienced? Thanks ...
