This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS convertible was the recipient of a frame-off restoration and has been driven just 1,200 miles since. It is said to retain factory-correct specifications throughout, including a JD-code 283ci V8 powerplant that has been rebuilt and is paired with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Finished in Ember Red with a white cloth top over a Medium Red vinyl interior, this first-model-year Chevelle is now offered with an owner’s guide and a clear title.
This Chevelle was launched in 1964 on General Motors’ “A” platform and this first-year example was treated to a frame-off restoration and was painted Ember Red (922) with a retractable white cloth top. It has quad headlamps, and brightwork for the front and rear bumpers with guards, side moldings, window surrounds, and emblems. The rear features an antenna and a full-width bezel between the taillamps, with a dual exhaust system with exits aft of each rear tire. The photos in the carousel show the car configured in both top-up and top-down form.
Factory 15” steel wheels are wearing polished wheel covers with SS-branded caps, and are wrapped in whitewall tires. The braking system is power-assisted.
The interior is fitted with Medium Red vinyl (786) front bucket seats and a matching rear bench, with the lap belts, door panels, dash, and carpeting finished in the same hue. An aluminum-center console runs between the front seats, and there is Malibu SS badging at the passenger side. Amenities include an AM radio and a vinyl-lined trunk which contains a Firestone whitewall spare tire.
Instrumentation is housed within a ribbed aluminum trim panel and includes a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 2k miles. True chassis mileage is unknown.
The JD-code 283ci V8 has been driven 1,200 miles since the rebuild and is reported to run well. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission and a console-mounted shift lever.
