Vehicle Story

This 1978 Buick Riviera is a fifth-generation example that is one of 2,899 LXXV editions produced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the marque. Purchased from the son of the original owner, the car has covered 30,026 since new, per the seller, while equipment includes the factory-installed 8-track player, leather upholstery with black trim, brushed metal interior trim, deep-pile carpeting, four-wheel disc brakes, and LXXV badging. Finished in the LXXV-exclusive color combination of silver and black over a gray leather interior, this 1978 Riviera is powered by a Buick 350ci V8 backed by a 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and is offered on a clear Colorado title in the seller's name.

Although Buick planned to produce only 1,000 LXXV editions to mark its 75th anniversary, production totaled 2,899 after the demand for the $586 option package exceeded expectations. This example appears unmodified from stock including the LXXV color scheme of black and silver with a black vinyl top, and is said to be in condition commensurate with its mileage, with the exception of a scratch on the driver's side rear quarter panel near the bumper described by the seller.

Wire wheels were part of the LXXV trim level and frame standard four-wheel disc brakes.

Brushed metal interior trim lines the instrument panel and also appears on the three-spoke steering wheel. The radio is described as the car's original 8-track deck, and the seats and door panels are trimmed in gray leather with black piping, while carpeting is deep-pile. Black carpeted floor mats line the footwells and the seller says the air conditioning compressor was replaced two years ago.

The bushed metal appearance is continued on the instruments which include an 85-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and an indicator for the automatic transmission. The five-digit odometer displays 30,026 miles, which are said to be original per the seller.

This Buick Riviera was produced in Flint, Michigan, and is equipped with a Buick 350ci V8 which had an output of 155 horsepower (170 for California emissions cars) and 280 pound-feet of torque. The engine sends power to the rear axle through a 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and the seller reports replacement of the air conditioning compressor two years ago.

This car is a dream to drive. I haven’t sit in any car as comfortable and wouldn’t be selling if I didn’t need garage space for other projects.

I really don’t know. Knowing the son, I expect that he probably pressure washed the engine during the detailing that he did before I purchased it. I also went and looked at the speedometer again and the numbers do line up. The listing is 100% factual from the info I got when I purchased the car and I have no reason to doubt it. Thanks for the question.

if the car has only 30,000 miles or so, can you explain why the paint is almost all the way off the valve covers?

Yes, it is actually the original mileage as per the original owners son. When the son picked up the car he had the title put in his name and the mileage did not get forwarded to the new title. If you saw the car in person you’d see that the lack of wear and tear are a reflection of the low miles. I understand your concern, but it is unwarranted as per what I know about the car.

That is not the original miles. The 6 is not in line with all of the other numbers. G. M has been making their speed-os for at least 75 years that when the speedo turns over 99.999 that the numbers will be out of line. G.M even had a court case in California in the early 60s to prove it. Sorry but we will need more proof on the milage....E
