Vehicle Story

This 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is a three-owner, 91k-mile roadster that is largely original and is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a modern stereo system, a factory color-matched hardtop, fog lamps, and power windows. The car was previously sold on AutoHunter but is being relisted after the sale fell through, at no fault of the seller. The car has been with the seller for eight years and is finished in red over a red MB-Tex interior. This R107 is now offered with a hardtop storage cart, service records, a spare key, an owner’s manual, and a clear Indiana title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in its original coat of red paint and has black and chrome bumpers, chrome brightwork, and factory fog lamps. The seller reports that the car has been garaged and covered consistently.

Factory 14” Bundt wheels are wrapped in 205/70 Rainforce MX4 tires of unknown age. Braking is handled by 4-wheel disc brakes.

The interior retains the original red MB-Tex bucket seats, along with matching door panels, dash, and carpet. The windows are power-operated, and the audio system is a replacement in-dash stereo system with aftermarket speakers. The seller reports that the driver-side window works intermittently, and the air conditioning has never worked under current ownership.

Instrumentation is framed by a 4-spoke steering wheel and consists of a 160-mph speedometer, 7k tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The 6-digit mechanical odometer shows approximately 91k miles, which the seller asserts is accurate.

The 4.5-liter M117 V8 is original to the vehicle and was factory-rated at 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission and a gated console-mounted shift lever.

Additional undercarriage photos can be found in the gallery.

The sale includes a wheeled hardtop storage cart, service records, a spare key, and an owner’s manual.

@TheNov – Was the SL - 450 Orig. painted white at some time . Do you have the Orig. German radio ? Thanks , Mark N. ...

I have a registration dating back to 1998 that lists the vehicle color as red. I can't speak to it prior to that time. I have a am/fm radio with cassette that came with the car. It says Decker Mexico Cassette on the outside of it. I don't know the history of it. I have that and some small speakers. All look like they were removed from the car when the newer stereo system was installed by Ovation sound system company (by a previous owner in 1998).

@19sjaak52 – How is the softtop ? ...

I have not put up the soft top since I have owned the car. When I purchased the vehicle, the previous owner showed me the soft top and it looked fine when he put it up. I am not a convertible person so I have only used the vehicle with the hardtop on.
