This 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible has been refinished inside and out and is described as being mechanically sorted, obtaining power from a rebuilt rear-mounted 1.2-liter flat-four mated with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes a hideaway modern stereo system, bright bumpers with overriders, and an auxiliary engine fan. Finished in red over a reupholstered two-tone black and tan cloth interior, this Karmann Ghia is now offered with a car cover and with a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The Karmann Ghia first launched in the mid-1950s as a 2+2 coupe or convertible, and this example carries a body style in the latter form. The exterior was subject to restoration and repaint in red under prior ownership, at which time the retractable soft top was also replaced. A snap-on boot for the retracted roof is included, and brightwork consists of front and rear bumpers with overriders, window trim, handles, grille, and a scripted Karmann Ghia emblem at the rear. The seller notes that there is a scratch on the passenger side above the rear wheel well.
Smoothed chrome wheels are wrapped in tires that were replaced four years ago. The rear suspension is a swing-axle configuration.
The interior contains reupholstered two-tone black and tan cloth low-back bucket seats, with matching door panels and black carpeting. The dash face is color-matched in red and topped with a black pad, and the steering wheel features a Wolfsburg castle crest at the center. An AM/FM/CD stereo is installed in the glove compartment and wired to new speakers. The front cargo area holds a spare tire.
Instrumentation includes a 90-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a fuel gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads just under 4k miles. True mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The rear-mounted, single-carbureted 1.2-liter flat-four was rebuilt in 2017 and carried a 40-horsepower rating when new. An auxiliary engine fan has been installed. There are no known issues noted at this time, and an oil change was last performed 800 miles ago in 2017. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a rebuilt 4-speed manual transaxle.
The sale includes a car cover.
