This 1972 Pontiac GTO is finished in Anaconda Gold with a Cordova Beige top, over a stock brown interior. This factory "High Output" car is powered by a 455ci V8 paired to a 4-speed Muncie M-22 "rock crusher" transmission. This GTO was initially sold new in Las Vegas, Nevada, and acquired by the seller in 1988 providing the seller with over 30 years of ownership. This Pontiac GTO underwent a frame-off restoration under the seller’s supervision. This GTO shows 96k miles on the odometer and is offered with a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name.
The car is finished Anaconda Gold and features a Cordova Beige top. The car recently underwent a frame-off restoration and the frame was powder coated at that time. In 1972, the GTO was a $344 option package for the Pontiac LeMans coupe rather than as a separate model. It is indicated here by “GTO Option” code 344 on the attached build sheet. Factory-installed side moldings will be included with the sale.
The new Hurst 15” wheels have been fitted with new Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T tires, and the original “Rally II” wheels are included in additionally. The seller states that disc brakes were installed on all four wheels as can be seen in the photos alongside Hotchkis suspension components for improved handling.
The interior is fitted with brown carpeting and stock saddle brown seats. The factory radio and 8-track cassette are mounted but not functional as a Kenwood Bluetooth-enabled head unit installed in the center armrest. Speakers have been upgraded with Rockford Fosgate units. The factory dashboard clock has been upgraded to a quartz movement to help accuracy. Additional features include air conditioning, wood grain trimmed steering wheel and dash, and center console with floor-mounted shifter.
Instrumentation is anchored by a 140-mph speedometer. A factory hood-mounted tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline is installed and the seller indicates it to be functional and has included photos with the engine at idle. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles, approximately 10k of which were added by the seller.
The 455ci High Output V8 was an option on the 1972 GTO, and was factory-equipped on this example, as indicated by the “34X” option code. The engine block in this example, though not original is correct for what the car came with. Performance has been improved utilizing a 9.5:1 compression ratio with a rotating assembly that has been balanced and blueprinted, with a Ram Air IV camshaft, forged “455 super duty” connecting rods, and Keith Black forged pistons. The 455 High Output V8 is paired to a M-22 “Rock Crusher” 4*speed manual transmission and heavy-duty Luk clutch and sends power to the rear wheels through an upgraded 12-bolt Positraction differential with 3.55 axle ratio. The dual exhaust uses a set of Flowmaster mufflers. The engine bay retains a stock appearance with the factory "455 HO" ram air style air cleaner.
