This 1978 International Harvester Scout II Terra 4WD rides on a 2.5” suspension lift and 31” all-terrain tires, delivering power to all four wheels by way of a Chrysler-sourced A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and a 2-speed transfer case. Power comes from a rebuilt 304ci V8 that was treated to a rebuild in 2009 and is equipped with a GMC throttle body fuel injection system. Finished in two-tone Brown Metallic and tan over a reupholstered light brown vinyl interior, this second-generation Scout is now offered with service records back to 1999 and a clear New York title in the seller’s name.
The Scout II launched for the model year 1971 on a 118” wheelbase as a two-door truck with a removable hardtop and various body configurations, including a full-length roof, a half-cab pickup, or a soft top. Design changes were carried out each subsequent year primarily with revision to the grille and headlight bezels. This example from 1978 was the recipient of a recent repaint in two-tone Brown Metallic over tan and exhibits brightwork for the front and rear bumpers, side view mirrors, and squared-off headlight bezels. Reportedly originating in Texas, the body is described as being rust-free and the paint shows in excellent condition per the seller.
A 2.5” suspension lift delivers increased ground clearance and 15” Cragar wheels mounted to BF Goodrich 31” tires provide traction at all four corners.
The interior is equipped with a reupholstered light brown vinyl bench seat and contrasting darker materials for the door panels, dash, steering wheel, and carpeting. Windows are manual-crank operated, and a modern Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system is installed in the dash. The bed was refinished with a diamond-plate floor and features two rear-facing jump seats with seatbelts, as well as a full-size spare.
Instrumentation includes a sweeping 100-mph speedometer and accompanying gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 87k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The numbers-matching 304ci V8 is mounted within a matte black engine bay and was rebuilt in 2009, featuring a GMC throttle body fuel injection system. Power is directed to all four wheels via a Chrysler-sourced A727 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission with 3.54 gears, Warn hubs, and a Dana 300 transfer case.
Photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
The sale includes service records dating back to 1999.

@broncoorscout – In a 1 to 10, how do you rate this Scout mechanically? ...
If a 10 is she starts right up can cruise at 50 plus miles per hour shifts perfect then I would rate it a 10.
@cromero – We sent the truck to a transmission shop and they sealed the transfer case and addressed a few spots on the transmission. There is a little oil after sitting for a while but unfortunately with these cars there always going to be a little leaking. ...
