This steel-bodied, Flathead powered 1940 Ford Deluxe convertible was purchased by the seller's father in 1972 before being passed onto him. For a total of 49 years under the ownership of the same family shows the care this car has received. After an older restoration, the Ford has been garage-kept and features upgraded period-correct speed equipment, including Offenhauser heads, a twin single barrel carburetor setup, an upgraded ignition system, and headers. The car is now available with a clear title in Virginia and an odometer that displays 3500 miles.
The 2-door convertible has vent windows and a tan-colored top. The seller says the top is in great condition, and that the black paint while nice does show some wear. Nice looking brightwork on the bumpers, side trim, headlight and taillight bezels, front grille, and hood trim. In addition, the car displays some period accessories such as fender skirts and dual side-view mirrors
The factory wheels with chrome hubcaps and beauty rings are wrapped in whitewall tires for a perfect era-correct look. The hood sides feature Ford Deluxe emblems.
The Deluxe trim cars featured a two tone dash in maroon and tan, presented well here in combination with the brown seating surfaces, carpet and door panels. The 3-speed manual transmission is controlled by a column-mounted shifter. This Ford also features manual windows and a clock mounted in the door of the glove box. The 3-speed manual transmission is controlled by a column-mounted shifter.
The instrumentation behind the steering wheel features gauges for fuel, oil, temperature, and the battery. The odometer reads 3500 miles.
The Flathead V8 began life as a military surplus engine and is now equipped with period-correct speed equipment such as Offenhauser heads, dual single-barrel carburetor setup, upgraded ignition system, and headers. The seller reports he does have the original parts for it included in the sale, and that it received service work recently. In July of 2021 the carburetors were rebuilt, the fuel sending unit was replaced, the gas tank was cleaned, and the gas lines were flushed and oil changed. The seller also states the military surplus Flathead was destined to be a tank engine but was never used until installation in this car. The engines only differed in terms of the clutch and oil pump. While the car engine had a 9 inch clutch and a 30 pound pump, the tank engine featured an 11 inch clutch and 90 pound pump.
Additional undercarriage photos can be found on the gallery.

@Markgary – Is there any rust? Does the car run? Any leaks from engine or the top? Is the top manual ? Is the clutch harder to press than a regular clutch? Any other problems that were not disclosed? ...
No rust on the vehicle. Runs very good - video at the bottom of the listing shows engine running. As flathead motors go it does loose a couple drops of oil from time to time. Top is manual and the clutch is no harder to press then a regular clutch. No other issues to disclose.
