OVERVIEW
This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Hurst/Olds Indianapolis 500 pace car edition convertible is described as being one of 130 of its kind produced for the model year. It underwent a nut-and-bolt restoration in 2010 that reportedly earned it top honors at events in both Illinois and Massachusetts. Under the scooped hood, the reportedly numbers-matching 455ci V8 is mated to a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. This limited-production muscle car was delivered to its first owner from Weidenbacher Oldsmobile in Decatur, Illinois in August of its model year and is equipped with pace car livery, a center console, air conditioning, and a trumpet-style dual exhaust system. Finished in Cameo White with gold accent striping over a black vinyl interior, this Hurst/Olds is now offered by the selling dealer with a Protect-O-Plate, an owner’s manual, booklets, build documentation, a pair of flags, and New York registration.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
As part of the restoration completed in 2010, the body was recoated in Cameo White with gold accent striping. Exterior features include a scooped hood, Indianapolis 500 Official Pace Car livery from the 1972 race, H/O emblems, rocker moldings, sport mirror caps, “500 Festival” decals, and a dual exhaust system with trumpet-style outlets. The car was reportedly awarded 960/1000 points and 998/1000 points at concours-level events in Massachusetts and Illinois.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Factory 14-inch Super Stock III wheels with gold pockets and polished trim rings are wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas G70 tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The cockpit is furnished with black vinyl Strato buckets up front, a bench in the rear, and matching details for the door panels, dash, center console, and carpeting. Simulated woodgrain veneer adorns the dash. Amenities include air conditioning, an eight-track audio system with an AM push-button radio, Soft-Ray tinted glass, and a deluxe steering wheel.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a clock, and a combination gauge showing other vehicle data. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 86,691 miles, but the selling dealer states that the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The reportedly numbers-matching 455ci V8 was rated at 300 horsepower and retains its original four-barrel carburetor, intake, exhaust manifolds, and distributor, according to the selling dealer. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a console-shifted TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and the car’s original rear end.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Steering is power-assisted. Chassis underpinnings include a Rallye suspension package. Stopping comes from power-assisted disc brakes up front and drums in the rear.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The sale includes an album documenting the restoration, a Protect-O-Plate, an owner’s manual, and a window sticker showing a $4,813.80 total retail price.
