Vehicle Story

This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8 roadster received a two-year frame-off restoration under current ownership and was refinished both inside and out, featuring a custom Cream Metallic Gold exterior and a replacement black cloth retractable top. The matching-numbers 2.9-liter inline-six is paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and benefits from recent mechanical work to the fuel system, cooling system, and electrical system. Finished with a reupholstered red vinyl interior and contrasting black carpeting, this 3000 Mk III is now offered with service records, a spare wheel, a convertible boot, and a clear Colorado title in the seller’s name.

This 3000 was assembled by British Motor Corporation and was subsequently the recipient of a two-year frame-off restoration and repaint in Cream Metallic Gold. The body itself is reported to be rust-free and straight, topped by a replacement black cloth retractable top with a plastic rear window. Accent trim is comprised of chrome front and rear bumpers with overriders at the rear, as well as brightwork for the grille window trim, and more. The seller states that the windshield is showing its age with pitting and minor scratches. There are photos in the gallery illustrating various phases of the restoration process.

A set of chrome-finished 15” wire wheels with spinner caps are mounted to newer tires. Stopping power comes from power-assisted brakes, and the pads and lines were replaced as part of the restoration. The suspension is also rebuilt with new or repaired components wherever needed and is said to display good driving dynamics.

The interior offers seating for four, having been trimmed with reupholstered red vinyl bucket seats with matching door panels and center console, contrasted by black carpeting. Insulation was added to the floor and firewall as part of the restoration, and additional equipment includes gloss woodgrain applique across the dash face and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The seller notes that the heater has been disconnected.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 70k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The original, matching-numbers 2.9-liter (2,912cc) inline-six features dual carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower when new. Various mechanical needs were addressed throughout the restoration, including the replacement of the fuel filter along with a cleanout of the fuel lines. The cooling system and radiator were reconditioned, and the master cylinder, voltage regulator, and carburetors were replaced. The emergency brake needs adjustment per the seller. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual with a replacement differential and rear end.

Photos showing the underside are available in the gallery. The seller adds that there is surface rust present that is consistent with age, but the integrity of the infrastructure is not compromised.

The sale includes service records, a registration document from the British Auto Industry Preservation Trust, and a snap-on red vinyl convertible boot.
