Vehicle Story

This 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is a largely original, cosmetically-restored, and mechanically-sorted microbus that features a pop-up rooftop with canvas sides, birch cabinets, a sink, a folding table, and various other RV-style amenities. Power comes from a rear-mounted 1,700cc flat-four that recently received replacement ignition components and a new carburetor, sending power to the rear through a 4-speed manual transaxle. Finished in a recent two-tone red with a white repaint over a reupholstered tan vinyl interior, this Type 2 is now offered with maintenance records, repair manuals, spare parts as detailed below, and a clear North Carolina title in the seller’s name.

The second-generation Type 2 Microbus debuted for the model year 1967 showing a refreshed exterior with a one-piece windshield, a sliding rear passenger side door, and eight landscape windows. This Type 2 is a Westfalia-built Campmobile that underwent a partial restoration and received a fresh two-tone, single-stage repaint in red with a white top, bumpers, and nose air intake vent. The pop-up rooftop is front-hinged and has canvas and screened materials for the sides. Exterior features include a spare tire mounted to the front of the vehicle in a vinyl cover, a trailer hitch at the rear, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller has provided up-close images of the rubber window moldings which show some cracking consistent with age, and a badge is missing from the front fender.

Black-painted 14” steel wheels with bright VW-branded center caps and bright trim rings are mounted to Ironman 195/75-sized whitewall tires with 2019 date codes. Braking is handled by four-wheel drum brakes.

The interior is fitted with reupholstered tan vinyl bucket seating up front, color-matched to the door panels, and contrasted by a black dashboard and grab-handle, newly-added black shoulder belts, and a heavy-duty black rubber floor covering. The rear of the cabin is carpeted and features birch cabinetry, a vinyl bench rear seat, an icebox, a sink, storage compartment, electric hookups, seat cushions, and a folding table. The audio system is a dash-mounted Jensen AM/FM/cassette radio.

Instrumentation consists of VDO gauges for the 90-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for other vehicle systems. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 59k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The rear-mounted, air-cooled 1,700cc Type 4 flat-four carried a factory rating of 67 horsepower and received recent service including a replacement carburetor, ignition components, and speedometer cable. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transaxle and a floor-mounted shift lever.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes maintenance history from 1971 to 2020, repair manuals, ball joints, and cables.
