Vehicle Story

This 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible is #3,028 of the 4,000 inaugural special-edition models produced for the model year and is now available for sale by the second owner with several modifications and 25,500 miles on the odometer. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 1.6L inline-4 paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and equipped with heat, air conditioning, power windows, brakes, and steering. Modifications include a cold air intake, Borla exhaust, updated headlamps, chrome engine and exterior accents, frame bracing, aftermarket stereo, and many additional accessories geared for convenience, functionality, and durability. The car is located in Davenport, Iowa, and is offered for sale with spare parts, memorabilia, and a clean Iowa title in the seller's name.

British Racing Green (cc: HU) covers the special edition convertible bodywork with an aftermarket chrome gas filler lid and surround and matching chrome wiper fluid jets serving as accents. Additional exterior features include Hella halogen headlamps, an electronic trunk release, front and rear mud flaps, a black metal grille, rubber whip antenna, body-matching rear window "sandwich" protector, black Mazda branded font bra with side mirror covers, and the original snap-down leather cover for use when the top is down. Blemishes noted by the seller include some minor wiper scratches on the windshield and some small dings in common areas around the car. A breathable blue custom car cover and tonneau cover with snaps come with the car, however, there is not a hardtop to be included in the sale.

Power steering is equipped to handle the original 14-inch 7-spoke steel wheels wrapped in recently replaced black-walled tires while 4-wheel power disc brakes with aftermarket stainless brake lines provide the stopping power and a fresh clutch grabs gear changes. Underneath, a custom cross brace has been installed for added chassis rigidity along with a stainless steel Borla exhaust system.

Tan leather upholstery covers the bucket seat interior as part of the British Racing Green special edition package accented by a black dash pad, center console, and trim pieces. Power windows are equipped along with air conditioning which is currently not functioning properly and likely in need of fresh R7 coolant. Additional interior features include a new trunk light, custom trunk, and console carpeting, new floor mats with an extra set included, 2 map pockets, fold-down console cupholder, larger replacement rearview mirror, Atlantic spare tire storage bag, and a British horn replacement. The only blemish noted on the interior is that of a sticky surface on the dash pad.

An aftermarket Clearwater stereo system has been fitted with the inclusion of an amplifier, replacement speakers in the doors, headrests, and subwoofer enclosure, and a Sound-O-Sound switchable volume controller connected to the factory head unit which is noted to have a non-operational CD player. Instrumentation consists of an 8k-rpm tachometer and 140-mph speedometer along with dials for oil pressure and coolant temperature and a 6-digit odometer showing 25,440 miles driven at the time the photo was taken.

Power comes from a 1.6L inline-4 shifted through a 5-speed manual transmission which was factory rated for 116hp with its multi-port fuel injection system. The engine is detailed, clean and comes dressed in a Mazda branded chrome valve cover with a Jackson Racing cold air induction system and a battery-mounted quick disconnect switch. The car is reported to run and drive like new and has been treated to regular servicing as needed.

The seller offers a number of relevant pieces of documentation and memorabilia including books, manuals, sales literature, magazines, custom luggage and toy models with the sale along with many of the original parts replaced by aftermarket units along with the sale. Additional photos of this 1991 special edition MX-5 are available for viewing in the gallery.

@JRZR – What is the 'sticky dash surface'? Does it cover the entire dash and how sticky is it? Has there been any effort to correct this? I assume the air conditioning system is leaking refrigerant. Any idea where the leak is? ...

It is the black factory paint covering most of the dash. It doesn't involve the rounded cowl over the instrument panel. This is a known problem, thought to be a long term reaction to using Armor-All type products. Search Miata.net. Some owners have replaced or repainted the dash. Others have covered it with black leather or 3rd party fitted dash pads. The paint feels soft and mildly sticky to the touch and could be scraped or rubbed off with pressure. The dash plastic under the paint is tannish in color. The air conditioning blows warm air and is likely related to a coolant leak. It has NOT been evaluated by my local repair shops, as they can't or don't want to work with R12 coolant, and I did not want to convert the car to a R134 system.

@Adenzeno – Is the seller the original owner? Has the car been driven in snow/winter? Has it been tracked? Thank you, Luis Venitucci ...
