Vehicle Story

This 1966 Volvo 122S is powered by a twin-carb, inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a Borg Warner Type 35 automatic transmission. It is said that the original owner stored the Volvo in a barn for 8 years before it was discovered in 2013.  The barn find Volvo was then restored by David Colvin from 2017 to 2018 and completed to the condition you see today. Originally manufactured in Goteborg, Sweden and currently available in Texas, equipment includes 3-point front seat belts, a heater, a radio, and an aftermarket air conditioning system. This Volvo has 102K miles and features a clear title in the seller's name.

In 1966, this 122s left Sweden's Goteborg factory wearing a light blue paint job. During the restoration, it was repainted a two-tone Old English white over Navistar International red. Chrome is used on the side trim, around the glass, bezels around the headlights and taillights and on the trunk lid. The seller reports the car received a frame off restoration from 2017 to 2018, which included replacing the rear quarter panel on the passenger side, dent removal, metalwork, some rust repair, a new windshield, a new rear window seal, new door seals, and stainless steel bumpers.

Factory wheels are wrapped in blackwall tires. The wheels have been powder-coated, and the front disc and rear drum brakes were rebuilt in 2017.

While the interior was originally equipped with three-point seat belts in the front, the two-point rear seat belts were added later. Other original equipment still on the Volvo includes a radio and a heater. In addition, the original black interior atop black rubber flooring has been replaced by brown carpeting and a new brown leatherette interior. Many additional new parts complete the interior beyond those details such as a dashboard cover, and headliner.

Instrumentation includes a speedometer, odometer, trip-meter, temp gauge and fuel gauge along with a compliment of indicator lights displaying warnings for oil pressure and amperage. The radio is said to be currently inoperable. The odometer shows 102K miles, of which 425 miles were added by the seller since its restoration from 2017 to 2018.

The 1780cc inline 4-cylinder engine features 5 main bearings and a dual SU carburetor setup which is paired to Borg Warner's Type 35 automatic transmission. Directing the power to the rear axles is a Hypoid Differential. The seller reports that a new gas tank was installed in 2015, the transmission received some service work in 2021, and the battery and battery mount were both replaced in 2015.

Additional undercarriage photos can be found in the gallery.

A folder of documentation on the restoration process of this car is included with the sale.

@agboss – Yes! All gauges, lights, A/C, heater, etc are in great working order. The restoration done included all new hoses, belts, filters etc as well. The A/C is brand new (2018) and hasn’t been used extensively since. This car is literally running nearly like it did coming off of the assembly line. ...

Thanks for the info. My first car was a 67 122S. Loved that car.

@PSwede – Hi. Is the heater, air conditioning, lighting, gauges, transmission etc. all working as it should? Was the rust repaired with sheet metal or bondo? Thank you. Pete ...

Sorry, forgot to answer your rust repair question. The entire body was stripped to metal. Overall there was very little rust considering it originated in PA before restoration. Only two spots required sheet metal (wheel well inside trunk) and minor rust spots, edges were patched with bondo if appropriate I believe.

@NHJim – Could you please post some pics of the underside? Nice car. A good friend of mine had one that he bought for $75.00 back in 1975 for $75.00 and drove it, without any restoration, until he sold it with over 300,000 miles on it. ...

Thanks! This car is in pristine condition. It even smells like a new car due to the complete redo of the interior during the off frame work. There are numerous undercarriage photos already included. Please scroll through the photos.
