Vehicle Story

This 1939 Ford is a Tudor Sedan that received a restoration in 2011 composed of cosmetic and mechanical refurbishments. The car was repainted, and the interior was refreshed. The car has spent 10 years with the seller who put 25K of its 77K miles on it. Equipment includes the original Flathead V8 engine, 59 AB heads, a 3-speed manual transmission, a 3.56 rear axle, an electric fan, a 12 V electrical conversion which includes an alternator, a banjo steering wheel, and manual windows. The Ford is offered with a clear New Jersey title in the seller’s name.

This Tudor Sedan is finished in two-tone black with House of Colors candy burgundy fenders, gray bumpers, graphic lettering, Ford logos, and emblems. The front and rear bumpers both feature Ford logos and 39 emblems mounted on the bottoms. On top of the resprayed paint are Ford emblems on the hood sides and shiny trim on the headlight and taillight bezels, hood sides, and windshield frame. The V8 emblem in front has also been painted blue. The quarter panels and trunk lid also sport Moon Shine Runner graphics with yellow lightning bolts. The seller reports minor rust damage in the rain gutter above the driver side door, and rust above both doors.

In 1939, new car buyers could choose between several different Ford body styles. A 2-door 3 passenger coupe, 2-door 5 passenger Tudor Sedan, and station wagon were available. The example here is the 2-door 5 passenger Tudor Sedan, and it features gray wheels with chrome hubcaps that are wrapped in blackwall tires. Each side of the car also sports black running board covers, side view mirrors, and a long piece of trim extending across the hood sides, doors, and quarter panels. The seller notes the tires are from 2017.

The interior is fitted with tan vinyl bench seats upfrong and in the back, along with matching door panels and side panels. While there is no headliner, the Ford is equipped with a banjo steering wheel and manual windows.

Instrumentation includes a tachometer and 100-mph speedometer. The odometer shows 77K miles, but true mileage is unknown. The seller states they have placed 25K of these miles on the car. Another gauge has been installed on the underside of the dashboard and behind the steering wheel. Drivers can operate the 3-speed manual transmission through the floor-mounted shifter topped with a black knob.

The Ford is powered by a Flathead Ford V8 with later model 59 AB heads displacing 239ci. The original drivetrain routes power to the rear wheels through a manual transmission and a 3.56 rear axle. The air and fuel mixture is managed by a twin 2-barrel Stromberg 97 carburetor setup. The seller states an electric fan has been installed, and the electrical system was converted to a 12 V system with an alternator.

The trunk is finished with gray carpeting and includes a full-size spare tire.
